4.0 out of 5 stars A good mixture if you are starting a collection 21 May 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
From Don McLean's "American Pie" to Charlie Drake's "Puckwudgie", these twenty tracks sum up the musical assortment that was 1972. "Journey" by Duncan Browne is quite memorable, what a pity that a greater output from the man never graced the charts more frequently during this decade. The big names are there too, Hollies, ELO, Wizzard, and the Move. And they put in two tracks from Hurricane Smith just to spoil us. Never heard of him ? Buy the CD and enjoy one of the greatest years of quality popular music, and at this price you should treat a friend as well !

4.0 out of 5 stars Another strong entry in this series 15 May 2005
By patc71s - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The best songs on this CD include The Fortunes-Storm in a Teacup (my favorite song on the CD, a truly great pop song), Deep Purple-Never Before, Procol Harum-Conquistador, and Hawkwind-Silver Machine (a hard rocker, Lemmy Kilminster's old band prior to forming Motorhead).

This entry in the series has more US chart hits than most of the others, including the Don McLean tunes (although American Pie is the not the full length version here), The Hollies-Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress, and Hurricane Smith-Oh Babe What Would You Say.

The Move-California Man was later covered by Cheap Trick. What Is Life is by Olivia Newton-John. She does an excellent cover job of George Harrison's hit, although Harrison's version is still better. Duncan Browne-Journey actually sounds like it could be a George Harrison song. Browne sounds just like Harrison.

The weakest track on here is Charlie Drake-Puckwudgie.

FYI-10538 Overture is by ELO.

This series of yearly highlights was a great gift idea. I think they should consider their re-issue. A great eclectic selection of songs.
