Product Description

The monsters are real, and time is their weapon.

Fed up with bad teachers and daily fights with her sister, sixteen-year-old Nicole Taylor yearns for something better. Sadly, she’s in for a letdown, because the world ends next week.

Nicole discovers she has a rare gift. She can bend time around her and even stop it completely. With her powers awakening, she must face the Reavers: horrific killing machines that exist outside our time.

Plagued with nightmares and ambushed by monsters at every turn, Nicole has one chance to stop their genocidal invasion. With help from a chain-smoking pyrokinetic, a neurotic sword-wielding assassin, and an icy goth chick with a crossbow, she may stand a chance.

But the Reavers are tireless foes, and Time is on their side.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book through the Goodreads first reads program. This has in no way affected my opinion of the quality of this work.

How is this an indie book?! It's been so long since I've read something that made me feel like my head was going to explode from shear amazing bookness(Yes, I know it's not a word, but this is the only way I can express how I'm feeling).

So, in no real order, this is what I loved:

1. I'm amazed by how well this male author handles a female protagonist, and a teen female protagonist at that. Nicole is genuine in her motives and thoughts. She is a very likable character without being perfect, she is wonderfully realistic. Even though her abilities are supposed to be unique/special she never gets arrogant about it.

2. The fight scenes were executed well and very detailed. You have been warned, very few gory details have been held back. There's nothing wrong with this, but I know for some this isn't really their cup of tea.

3. The details are nice. There are some amazing uses of imagery such as "it's body flowed like a river of metal plates". All the creatures are unique and well described. Sound also plays a big role and is described very well.

4. Minor characters are developed well. I pretty much fell in love with Daniel. He's got this witty "Doctor Who" with a dark twist way of talking and handling things, or at least that's how I see it in my mind. He's awesome, but flawed, and he's the male love interest without being so gorgeous and HAWT he takes up half the book with his prettiness. Or maybe he is gorgeous... my point is, the romance doesn't eat the story like in so many YA books. Originality for the win!

5. The universe is a hamburger, by the way.

A good review has to point out bad aspects... right? Give me a minute...

1. Some minor grammar errors and awkward phrasing that an editor could clear up.

2. A few passages seem oddly paced.

3. I'm scared there won't be a sequel.... there will be a sequel, right? Please?

So, boys and girls, this book is (currently) only $.99 on the Amazon kindle store so at least give this a try, I think it's great, maybe you will too.

Also, a note: This is a completely independent author and he seems to work very hard on writing his books and promoting them. I find that admirable, and maybe you could see that as a reason to try this book or his other work "The Dragons of Jupiter" which I intend to read soon, even though it's out of my normal zone (non-ya).

5.0 out of 5 stars Action packed read! 30 Jan 2014

Time Reavers is a quick paced, action packed YA read. It is filled with suspense, dynamic characters, twists, and plenty of action with enough quirkiness to make the characters interesting, without being too out there. I would suggest this book to anyone who likes the Hourglass Series (by Myra McEntire) or the Maze Runner Series (James Dashner).
5.0 out of 5 stars New, Fresh, Exciting - A Must Read! 3 Dec 2014

Tired of reading the same, repackaged story over and over again? Well, look no further for an excellent, exciting read, and pick up a copy of Time Reavers. While struggles and battles of questionably good over equally questionably bad characters are prevalent, the incredible world created by Jacob is far from common - everything here feels very new and fresh to me. I simply couldn't put it down!

Other reviews will go into more detail, but the proximity of two dimensions to each other and the extremely creative and temporary manipulations of time that occur in the book are simply brilliant! The character definitions are good, interesting, and they have their own realistic lives, hopes, failures, and struggles. The universe set up is one of the most interesting I've read in years, and I read a lot! I read while working out on a treadmill or EFX, and one good sign of a captivating book is when my 65 minutes is over without realizing it - the time just flew by... or was it a tau freeze?

The book is of good length and, honestly, the only flaw I see is that there are no sequels as of yet. I want to say so much more, but I don't want to spoil any of the story. Of course, everyone's tastes vary, but I don't see how anyone who likes such genres wouldn't absolutely love this book! It is simply a must-read!

Enjoy, -Mark
4.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed the entire book 2 Dec 2014

Interesting and mostly exciting read, but not very gripping. I enjoyed the entire book, but wasn't sure I would buy any others by this author. I had already purchased another of thee author's books, but I'm not sure if I will read it. Probably will, but feel some let down after reading this title. This is not a bad review, the book was definitely worth reading, it just felt a little less than gripping.
5.0 out of 5 stars Great Novel Built Around an Original Concept 4 Jun 2014

I was first introduced to the author when I read his book “The Dragons of Jupiter”. At that time I was going through a phase where I was bored with the standard sci-fi fare and had decided to venture out into the unknown. I came across this new author, Jacob Holo, and his book, Dragons of Jupiter. I read it and I loved it. You can check out my review of that novel on its product review page. Flash forward to now, I have just finished reading “Time Reavers”, and I am happy to report that Dragons of Jupiter was not a one hit wonder.

One thing that I want to stress is that, even those I enjoyed both books and they are both written by the same author, the two books are drastically different. Where Dragons of Jupiter was a futuristic, sci-fi epic, with large scale battles, and complex politics. Time Reavers is more of a modern day fantasy novel with a much more young adult tone and feel to it. The author does an excellent job of building the world and the characters that inhabit it. Without spoiling too much I will say that the novel takes the reader into two different “worlds” each with their own set of rules and characteristics. The interplay between the two creates some very interesting scenes. The characters are also very well done. They are most definitely a motley crew, but they become very endearing to the reader very quickly.

Overall, I am happy to say that this new author’s sophomore effort is definitely a great novel. I look forward to reading what he comes up with next.
