Book Description

Time Out Stockholm guides you through the sights, arts and culture of Scandinavia's coolest capital

Product Description

Perched on the edge of the Baltic, Scandinavia's coolest capital is made up of one-third water, one-third green space and three-thirds style. You just have to clock the number of glossy Swedish lifestyle mags lining the shelves of the newsagents, or the calculated cool clothing sported by young Stockholmers, to realise that this place is at the forefront of design - from chic boutiques to cutting-edge hotels. But it is also a city of substance, with over 100 galleries and 70 museums - impressive stats for a population roughly one-seventh the size of London. And for a break from all that Nordic chic, there are thousands of pine-covered islands a ferry ride away for a thoroughly laid-back getaway.

Stockholm is a beautiful and exciting city to explore at any time of the year, and this guide provides a lot of useful and detailed information to help you do just that. Guidebooks are cursed by their nature to be outdated the very day after their publication, but a sensible and capable traveller is always adaptable and aware of their limitations, and even then guidebooks can provide a very good impression of what to expect pricewise. There is no 'top ten things to do' included in this book, but the 48 hour suggested itinerary is essentially the same thing. Moreover, this is a guide, not an instructional manual, so in response to the other reviewer I can advise that if you have insufficient time to interpret the guide for yourself, I would be willing to recommend numerous websites that can give you a brief summary of the main tourist attractions, or even contact details for tour agencies within the city.

Do visit Stockholm, it is a fantastic place. If you are in need of a guidebook, do take this one. It is one of the best.

It's good, however it lacks some important features some other travel guides have.

My main issue though was that it missed "top 10 things to do". I like this kind of thing as when going on a short weekend away you don't want to read a whole guide book in order to decide where to go, in the end we resorted to Trip advisor for what to do whilst we were in Stockholm.

It did have a 48hr guide which is nice, however in reality Stockholm is expensive and a lot of things listed are pricey, so I guess if you have loads of money then this guide may appeal.

All in all it didn't actually help us decide what to do whilst we were away.

Great tips, fantastic pics, useful maps 13 Feb 2012

I was very impressed with this Stockholm guide. On my way to Stockholm, I started reading about the various neighborhoods, the city's history, literature, museums, music venues, society and modern life. The book was very informative on all fronts. During my weekend in the city, I relied exclusively on this book and was never disappointed. Many travel guides avoid color pictures because of high printing costs - not Time Out. Be it restaurants, museums, or galleries, this guide gives you the full description in conjunction with the photograph. The book is also well organized, has a decent index, and overall is just a joy to read. The maps were useful when I walked miles across the city, and the restaurant recommendations were spot on in terms of price level, quality, and interior style. In sum, Time Out has published an essential and comprehensive guide book for your trip to Stockholm.
