Book Description

Time Out Stockholm guides you through the sights, arts and culture of Scandinavia's coolest capital

Product Description

Perched on the edge of the Baltic, Scandinavia's coolest capital is made up of one-third water, one-third green space and three-thirds style. You just have to clock the number of glossy Swedish lifestyle mags lining the shelves of the newsagents, or the calculated cool clothing sported by young Stockholmers, to realise that this place is at the forefront of design - from chic boutiques to cutting-edge hotels. But it is also a city of substance, with over 100 galleries and 70 museums - impressive stats for a population roughly one-seventh the size of London. And for a break from all that Nordic chic, there are thousands of pine-covered islands a ferry ride away for a thoroughly laid-back getaway.

I tend to buy Lonely Planet guides, but I thought they were too big for a just a few days in Stockholm. Thanks to the reviews here I discovered the Time Out guides and now I am in love. It had exactly waht I was looking for. First of all, the layout of the maps and indications on them is prefect, so you can find every place easyly. Then, it has a very extensive and interesting introduction of the city's history, culture, social situation etc.
It is devided by neighbourds, what in the case of Stockholm is quite nice as the city is made of different islands.
The restaurants and accomodations we went to and were recommended in the guide were just as described.
It also has great descriptions of the most typical places to visit, as well as some tips and itineraries around the city for a not-so-touristic visit.
The size is also perfect. It fits in a handbag, is not tick so it is flexible and easy to use.

Don't go without ! 22 Aug 2010

Before a holiday somewhere I always analyse which guide seems to be the best and invariably find that the 'Time out' are the best ones. Here once again, I found the informations to be very helpful, accurate and definitely enhancing my stay. I only wish I took the time to read it in full as I noticed some stuff mentionned that I should have done and stupidly omitted because did not read it carefully enough. In any case the layout of the book with maps etc, is excellent and the best guide to take along. Just make sure that ,unlike me, you actually read it beforehand !

I've bought a lot of different city guides in the past, but in recent years I just go straight for the Time Out guides. They have for me the right balance of size and content. I find guides like the DK guides too detailed and fussy to be of much use when you go to a new place. The Time Out guides are small enough to put in your pocket (just) and simple enough for quick reference on a street corner. unlike the Rough Guide, which has barely any photos, these have enough so you can see what things look like to help you decide whether you want to go or not. The photos are useful rather than artistic.
I like the maps section too, although in the Stockholm guide, the area doesn't extend to the television tower, which is a tourist attraction in itself. Even so, they are very clear and helpful maps.
All in all, for me, my favourite city guides. They're consistently helpful.
