For years the Time Out London Eating and Drinking Guide was the best bet if you wanted a comprehensive guide to eating and drinking in London covering pretty much every area of the capital and every style and nationality of cooking in depth. I've lost touch of the number of times I've gone out carrying a copy of the guide, rifling through it deciding what new place I could try that evening.

...except something seems to have gone very badly wrong this year. The number of entries has been drastically reduced, maybe by more than half. And, the background material allowing you to search the entires for certain types of place or places for certain types of event has also been pared to the bone. Interestingly, the font size has been increased significantly, maybe to disguise the fact that there are far fewer entries.

Whether this is a temporary aberration or permanent isn't clear. What is clear is that what was once an essential guide has become no more than useful at best. There now looks to be a large gap in the market for another guide to fill.

Time Out is Tired 25 Oct 2010
I normally buy the time out restaurant guide every year - and as other reviewers have mentioned have found it to be a fantastic resource to help find interesting restaurants.

This years guide is a shadow of its former self. The new guide is physically smaller than the previous year and with a larger font size. Because fewer restaurants now fit on a page the new layout is much clumsier and harder to use.

The number of restaurants covered is not stated in the new edition but seems to be about half of the old edition. They also dropped the red star (very good food) and green star (cheap) classifications.

The overwhelming impression I have of this guide is that the compilers are demotivated, fed-up and could only manage this rather sad version of a once-great guide.

If you already have a 2010 guide - don't bother to buy the 2011, just hang onto the 2010 and read some blogs.

What has happened? 17 Nov 2010

I buy the time out eating guide every year and probably refer to it on a daily basis and have found some amazing restaurants, bars and pubs! But this 2011 issue is awful - where have all the independent restaurants gone? Most of the entries are for chains - pizza express, nando's, GBK - I already know that there is one of these on every high street, I don't need to buy a eating guide to tell me!
Very disappointed and hope that they realise and get it together for 2012!
Wouldn't recommend to anyone to buy.
