Book Description

7 July 2005 "Time Out" Guides

Time Out London Walks features 30 walks from London writers, each revealing a personal insight into their chosen corner of the capital. From ancient woodland to modern skyscrapers, motorway underpasses to stately homes, most parts of the city are subject to the scrutiny of the writers. The end result is a book that can be read with pleasure at home, as a collection of writing about London, and above all used as a thought-provoking guide to a series of walks through the capital.

Highlights:

Margaret Forster lets us in on her regular walk around Hampstead Heath

Graham Norton takes us to the gay bars and clubs of Soho

John Vidal trudges 29 miles along the side of the Thames, giving a passionate critique of soulless developments and sensitive regeneration from the Thames Barrier to Hampton court

Dan Cruickshank passes an architectural eye over the city

Kate Kellaway makes a nostalgic return to her childhood in Kentish Town and Hampstead

Irma Kurtz rediscovers the monied pavements of Knightsbridge and Kensington

Dr Ruth Richardson sets off on the trail of bodysnatchers

Yvonne Roberts contrasts the class-conscious commons of Clapham and Wandsworth

Lucinda Lambton leaps from grave to grave in Kensal Green Cemetary

If you like going for a walk and discovering new parts of London this book is worth buying. The walks are all different and fascinating in there own way. Maps are easy to read and the stories that go with the walks add some perspective and educational (or can be amusing) anecdotes on the walk. I have to say i've done all the walks in this book and vol 2 and have loved them all. Whether in the rain or sun, on my own or with a friend it gets you out and about with a purpose and always something new to dicover. Have to admit i haven't done the walks over 10 miles though. Last thing, if you bring a camera you will guarantee to find an interesting photo opportunity on each of these walks too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Urban walking 5 Feb 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a good read, with each walk picked and described by a different celebrity in detail. It has a lot of background or history thrown in, which would be great for someone new to London, and shows a small, detailed map for each walk. As a long-term resident, not much of it is new to me, and I was slightly disappointed that it is all on streets (was looking for more park/green stuff). However, I could not recommend it highly enough for a visitor, even one with imperfect English.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent if you love exploring London 16 April 2010
Format:Paperback
A very interesting book suggesting different routes in exploring London, lovely recommendation for cafe, pubs or restaurants. If you are planning to get one, the new edition is coming up in May. Summer time is definitely the best time to explore London on foot. You could impress your date too.

3.0 out of 5 stars mildly useful 15 Feb 2009

There are some interesting ideas here but the walk instructions are too vague to follow. I got lost trying to follow the Fulham walk and I did try day one of the two day Thames walk and thank God I had found better instructions on the Web.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Book if you want to discover London 18 May 2006
By S. Schisgall - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I've gone on close to 20 walks and I love each walk more then the one before. This book is a must have if you want to see London at its best. You will see every part of London and discover so much about the city but always be left amazed. Time Out did an extraordinary job with the walks, but the writing is just as entertaining as the walks themselves. Phenomenal Book. If you like walking or are planning on spending an extended period of time in London, you have to get this book.
