1.0 out of 5 stars Frustrating to use, 27 Sep 2003
By
David Bradshaw "hassleddad" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: "Time Out" London for Children (Kids out) (Paperback)
This guide is packed full of useful information, but it is organised so badly that most of it is unaccessible. I was meaning to use it extensively to organise my four-year-olds summer break, but in the end could not find anything of use in this book that I didn't already know about.

To improve it, the authors need to
1. Be more opinionated about the entries, so I know what's good and what isn't. Currently the entries are innocuos in the extreme.
2. Write more about things with lots to do, less about things that have very little (many entries in a section are all the same length).
3. Drop the borough-by-borough organisation, it's pointless (provide it in the index instead).
4. Provide an index by age.
5. Do it just for kids, so drop all the tourist sights (you can read about these in plenty of other places) unless they're heavily geared towards kids (so drop Buck Palace, keep the London Transport Museum).
6. Print the book so it will stay open, it doesn't immediately close itself if you let go (unless you break the spine...)

If the authors and editors did this kind of thing, this might be useful, but at the moment this is a really frustrating book to try and do anything useful with if you don't have time to read it cover-to-cover and make your own index!

5.0 out of 5 stars this is the one to go for!, 14 July 2002
This review is from: "Time Out" London for Children (Kids out) (Paperback)
...so, I was in for a dark and dismal time in London until I picked up this brilliant book and discovered what a wonderful place London really is for 10-year olds! It is packed with fun ideas and things to do and places to see with all the extra info like websites, phone nos, admission prices and opening times - and all very up to date. This handy guide is grouped into different areas around London with places to eat and visit and written by someone who really knows what interests kids. I particularly liked the 'things to do' with handy tips about places! What's more, it's really good value - and you get some money off vouchers inside. Last but not least, it's not too big to carry around with you. My trip's all planned now!
