Having spent a day in Florence with my mother using Lonely Planet and my dad using Rick Steeves - it was a nightmare! Restaurant recommendations were touristy or rubbish and it was hard to get around. I went and bought Time Out Florence from a bookshop near our hotel because of previous good experiences with Time Out Rome. The recommendations were spot on, and were equally good for a side trip to Pisa (botanical gardens were lovely and the chocolate shop and gelateria recommended on the river were fantastic). I highly recommend this book and encourage you to try as many recommended gelateria as possible - the three we tried were amazing.

florence overview 15 Jun 2009
excellent supplement to Lonely Planet guide - either would do but this has more interesting nuggets of info and better at placing it in context

Excellent Guide 14 Feb 2010
By Julia
This guide was invaluable for information on getting the best out of a visit to Florence. Not only good on what to visit, but had invaluable information on things like having to stamp your train ticket before getting on a train (or get a 50 euro fine!). Also the map pages were well designed and more usable than the one the hotel gave us. It was a really great companion for our visit.
