Book Description

4 Oct 2007 Time Out Budapest

Forever characterised as two towns dramatically divided by the Danube, Budapest is back at the heart of Europe. This metropolis of ornate spas, opulent hotels and elegant coffeehouses is reliving its glory days as a Habsburg hub. Now, after a century of wars, uprisings and Socialist stasis, the Hungarian capital is gleaming again with luxury options.

Away from the five-star hotels along the river and city ring, Budapest is also a-buzz with cultural firepower and underground energy. While inner-city courtyards bloom as bohemian nightspots for DJs (the same DJs who spin at foam parties in all-night Turkish baths), a high-brow arts agenda thrives in a sumptuous opera house and the prestigious contemporary National Theatre. Gypsy, folk and Balkan styles are regular features on the concert programme.

New downtown shopping hubs display the best of today's Hungarian art, fashion and design, distinct from the time-warp tourist traps of yesterday.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent guide book 2 Mar 2009
We went last winter and this book was one of the best city guides I've ever come across. We intended to use it for restaurants/cafes some of the time and just 'fall in' to others but we found the ones it recommended so good we used it all the time.

I tried to get one for Krakow later but they don't do one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good 16 May 2011
This is a useful guide to Budapest but the text is, at times, very dense and it is difficult to get an instant feel for what you might like to do. However, it is, I think, the most comprehensive of the guides I used and we did find a number of good restaurants using it.

This edition is now a little dated.

For casual travellers and tourists, I would recommend the Eyewitness Budapest guide as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lifesaver... 19 Feb 2009
Went for a friend's birthday and like all Time Out guides it provided all the inside information we needed to know to have a great weekend... couple of great restaurants, thermal baths and a night out on the tiles.

I bought this for my daughter in college who was studying abroad in Budapest. Also bought another popular guide. I don't think she used either, but I really thought they would have been helpful.
