Product Description

Synopsis
Written in 1895 the Time Machine is an early example of time travel. The Traveler uses his machine to visit many different eras. In 802,701 A.D he discovers a communistic community that is quite peaceful. The Eloi had no conflict and because of that there was no need for improvements thus their culture was stagnating. The Traveler discovers that under the surface things are not as they seem.

5.0 out of 5 stars I saw the movie first. The book difference was a surprise., 7 Sep 2008

I grew up on the Rod Taylor /George Pal movie. When I started the book I expected it to be slightly different with a tad more complexity as with most book/movie relationships. I was surprised to find the reason for the breakup of species (Morlock and Eloi) was class Vs atomic (in later movie versions it was political). I could live with that but to find that some little pink thing replaced Yvette Mimieux was too munch.
After al the surprises we can look at the story as unique in its time yet the message is timeless. The writing and timing could not have been better. And the ending was certainly appropriate for the world that he describes. Possibly if the story were written today the species division would be based on eugenics

4.0 out of 5 stars Short but great, 10 Jul 2008
By Smokey (Scotland) - See all my reviews
I thought this was an excellent story. I'm not really a big fan of the classics but I loved this book. The story is fairly fast paced and you really get attached to the charactors. It is a quick read but the author still manages to pack a lot of story into a very small book. I'd definately recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great short book..., 28 Mar 2009

Whilst idly reading through articles on wikipedia one day I came across the article on this book. There is a chapter called "The Grey Man" which was removed from the book as it was thought too disturbing and I found it to read online. It was awesome, in the true sense of the word, and had me lost in the story.

I wasn't let down in buying the whole book. Although small, and although it too misses the censored chapter, it was riveting and I loved it!

This particular version is a wobbly paperback which I thought quite wide, but it was easy enough to hold to read so no problems there.

3.0 out of 5 stars A classic but not timeless itself, alas
H.G. Wells, read today, may not hold the impact that his ideas and writing had then, in 1895. This was his first work, it seems and it is a little Victorian in tone, a bit slow... Read more
