A thoroughly enthralling and captivating continuation of the "Deverry" series. Katherine Kerr's trademark of jumping between present and past works particularly well in "A Time of Justice", helping the reader to understand the animosity between Rhodry and "the raven".
The story thunders along to the inevitable confrontation but with a few twists, turns and tears along the way. The dragon brings a new dimension to the "Deverry" tale and the relationship between Rhodry and the dragon is quite entertaining!
Although she has a tendency to copy word for word descriptions of people/places from earlier books, this only becomes obvious when all four books are read "on the bounce" and does not detract in any way from the story.
For anyone who has not read Katherine Kerr - I personally would highly recommend her. However, I would suggest that the reader starts at the beginning, ie; "Daggerspell". Although not entirely essential, there are many references to the tales told in the first series and without this prior knowledge I think some level of enjoyment/understanding would be lacking.
Overall Katherine Kerr certainly rates in my "Top 5" fantasy fiction authors and the Westlands Cycle and "A Time for Justice" do not disappoint.

With this book Katharine Kerr wraps up the Westlands cycle. It is a fairly decent final book, bringing a number of ongoing stories together and finishing things decently. With that said, it felt a little soulless to me - with her first four books, Kerr made the characters come alive and I had a lot of interest in their doings. Gradually I am losing interest in Rhodry and co.
In this novel we head back in time for a time, and that section was by far the most gripping. We meet a previous incarnation of Raena, the raven-woman, known in those times as Lady Mallona. It is no accident that my favourite part of the book coincides with us reading about Jill and Rhodry while they rode the long road as silver daggers. I far preferred the two characters at that point.
Arsozah is fun to read about - the dragon seems to be the only character at this point that Kerr seems to have fun writing about.
So an almost anti-climatic end to the Westlands cycle. Kerr has continued writing about Rhodry (or Rori Dragon-friend, as he should also be known as now) but I find myself losing interest in where she can take the Deverry world.

I loved this book and all the others in the series. Katherine Kerr is my absolute all time favorite author.
When I first saw the title Time of Justice however, it really through me for a loop because I was thinking, "Oh my, a Katherine Kerr book I not only haven't read but had never even heard of!!"
The confusion is because this book is also published under the title of "Days of Air and Darkness". I didn't want others to experience my confusion so just wanted to let everyone know.

Time of Justice

Fans of Katharine Kerr will not likely be disappointed by "Time of Justice". Those who have come to appreciate her gritty and visceral interpretation of an alternate medieval world will not be left lacking. Rhodry's noble yet flawed heroism, the frequent flashbacks, and sorcery of a very ancient kind are all present throughout the novel. As an installment in the ongoing, complex series, it is indispensable. However, this book lacks the strength to stand on its own as so many of Kerr's previous (and later) works have been able to. One feels that Kerr was writing for the deadlines rather than for herself, and this give the narrative a hurried, superficial feel. While a fan should in no way be discouraged from reading this book, new readers are apt to be confused and put off by a style which depends greatly upon its intricate twists and meanderings. Therefore, this should be looked upon as a step towards a conclusion rather than a representative of the whole.
Breathtaking in scope; pity about the QA.

I've been reading this series since 1998, and love it. Having it available in eBook format is a fantastic plus; I'm on limited space, and need to cut back on the physical volumes.
Unfortunately, this Kindle edition - unlike the physically printed "dead tree" edition - is marred by myriad typos and formatting errors. Some of them are minor (using the wrong apostrophe for abbreviations; hyphenation marks where they don't belong); some are more significant (spelling mistakes, probably from OCR errors that weren't caught on a proof-read; poor text flow - missing paragraph breaks and similar.)
The book itself - indeed, the entire series - is a fantastic read, and well worth the asking price. Sadly, the eBook edition needs more polish before it can be called a properly finished product. The same applies to the other three books in the Westlands cycle of the overall series (I haven't yet bought the other 11 books for my Kindle.)
