This is a great book to curl up with on a Sunday afternoon with a glass of wine. A classic Victoria Holt gothic romance novel. Cordelia Grant, an orphan, goes to finishing school in Europe at the behest of her aunt. Whilst there she meets a mysterious, and potentially dangerous, stranger. On her return to England she then meets a dashing man, who is rumoured to have murdered his wife and mistress, but Cordelia knows not to believe gossip. A great read and highly recommended.

Victoria Holt is an excellent storyteller. It is well researched and the mystery is cleverly unfolded. The heroine is resourceful and has a sense of humour. Her love interest is by no means a paragon but again not without humour in his pursuit of her. I particularly like the other female characters as well - her lovely, warm hearted aunt and the strict but fair principal of the girl's school she works for. Holt is my not so guilty pleasure. At her best, she can give that other superb storyteller, Mary Stewart, a run for her money.

Victoria Holt knows how to keep you guessing. Her books are old fashioned but all have a hint of sex without the gory datails. Love 'em.
