About the Author

Until recently Jean Francis owned her own catering company, coordinating the many different occasions that mark life?s milestones such as birth, marriage and death. Jean was inspired to write this book following some very moving funerals she herself attended. She realizes that these occasions do not have to be merely an event to ?go through? but can provide a real opportunity to give a very personal tribute to the deceased and what their lives stood for.

An inspirational guide 24 April 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Curiosity led me to open this book, as it seemed such an unusual subject on which to base a paperback. What an unexpectedly fascinating read it turned out to be! Far from being mawkish or sentimental in any way, it describes funerals of all kinds, from the traditional through humanist and multi-faith to woodland burials using real-life accounts, rather like a series of snapshots from intriguing angles. It is full of practical and inspiring advice on how to deal with such a situation on every level, written with the greatest respect for everyone involved, but with wit, humour and compassion throughout. I now know exactly how I want to depart this plane and how to plan it myself, thus freeing my relatives and friends from having to make decisions at what is already a stressful enough time, and leaving them free to celebrate a life (I hope!). It's even fun to plan...Jean Francis has produced an absolute gem! Whatever will she turn her gentle but incisive gaze upon next, I wonder?

Surprised by joy 25 Jan 2008
Format:Paperback
This absolutely brilliant book has opened my mind to the possibilities open to us to create a really personal funeral -- as unique as the person who has died. We tend to think of funerals as bleak, empty occasions to be got through as quickly as possible, but Jean Francis shows us how to celebrate a life in ways which are meaningful and even joyous -- which acknowledge the sadness we feel but enable us also to give thanks for the life lived. It is time to break the mould of the 'traditional' twenty-minutes-at-the-crem, production line funeral in the UK and embrace death as a natural event. This is a truly inspirational book, full of kindness and understanding, which will inform and empower you. Just make sure you buy it before you need it!

what an eye opener 7 Aug 2011
Format:Paperback
Until I found this book I thought all funerals were by nature sad and gloomy affairs, but Jean has opened my eyes and made me realise how with a little planning a wonderful memory can be created which will be a very personal, lasting tribute to the deceased. We tend not to think about our own death or that of our loved ones until it is upon us and that is not a good time to plan anything! So I recommend this book for the here and now, get the ideas and be prepared. It's not a sad book!
