Curiosity led me to open this book, as it seemed such an unusual subject on which to base a paperback. What an unexpectedly fascinating read it turned out to be! Far from being mawkish or sentimental in any way, it describes funerals of all kinds, from the traditional through humanist and multi-faith to woodland burials using real-life accounts, rather like a series of snapshots from intriguing angles. It is full of practical and inspiring advice on how to deal with such a situation on every level, written with the greatest respect for everyone involved, but with wit, humour and compassion throughout. I now know exactly how I want to depart this plane and how to plan it myself, thus freeing my relatives and friends from having to make decisions at what is already a stressful enough time, and leaving them free to celebrate a life (I hope!). It's even fun to plan...Jean Francis has produced an absolute gem! Whatever will she turn her gentle but incisive gaze upon next, I wonder?
