Book Description

What do a condemned English pirate, an illiterate Scottish girl, a mute French nun, a young Australian prostitute and a Greek juvenile delinquent have in common?

They are all human/Eridon half-castes, and the Great Council of Eridon believes that they will be able help save their planet from invasion by the ruthless Warlord of Etiros. This reptilian conqueror has managed to steal a deadly Crystal of Power and enhance her mental abilities to godlike levels. The only way she can be defeated is by someone of comparable mental strength, armed with a similar artefact.

Many thousands of years earlier, Eridon explorers concealed the first Crystal of Power somewhere on Earth, and never revealed its location. It is believed that the human/Eridon half-castes, descendants of these explorers, subconsciously know its resting-place.

The Great Council of Eridon sends a young mentalist named Heathcliff to travel through Earth’s history, tracking down five half-castes who can help him find the Crystal, and bring it back to Eridon before it’s too late.

However, five such different characters have little in common, and do not always agree. And at least one of them wants the Crystal for himself. And to make matters worse, someone else has already discovered Earth’s Crystal and taken it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining 12 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A good, fast-moving story where everything that can go wrong does and the characters have to constantly work round the problems.

The crystal of the title will save the planet Eridos, and the rest of the galaxy, from empire building nasties. It's been buried on Earth but where has been forgotten. Enter Heathcliff, whose task is to rescue five Eridon half-castes from various parts of Earth's history and then to use them to find the crystal (how is explained in the book).
Having got his team together – at considerable risk to himself and his talking time-ship, Rhys – he has to keep them on message long enough to locate and retrieve the crystal. Not easy when only some of them understand what's happening and the others have their own agendas.
Then there's a night-club bouncer named Jason who wants to use the crystal for his own purposes, and something peculiar in the time-ship's brain.
The story has an interesting cast of feisty characters, some problematic technology and a good deal of humour.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Rag Tag Bunch of Time Travellers 25 Sept. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was one of my DSOA (Daily Selection for free Kindle Download on Amazon) on my Blog in March. At the time of writing this Review' (September 2013) its still available on Amazon for free, although I'm not sure how much longer it will be available as a free download. Having said that, it would be well worthing paying for.

It's actually the first Ethan Somerville title that I've read, and am happy to advise that I found it thoroughly enjoyable.

Without wishing too many spoilers: an effeminate-looking Alien collects together the oddest assortment of people from various time periods to help him seek out and capture a Crystal that could effect his entire planet, and stave off a power hungry Warrior from another planet.

How much use will a bi-sexual pirate, Victorian harlot, illiterate Scottish maiden, a Viking's sex slave nun and a modern teenager actually be to him, and how much trouble can they actually get into?Well, you'll just have to read it to find out, but suffice to say, I loved it.

All in all, 4 stars is highly appropriate, and I can't wait to read more in this series - I will add the details on the series on my "Review by Series" section on the blog).

EDITED TO ADD: having sat and typed the Error/Bug Bear list (see my Blog Post) from my highlighted notes on Baby, I have just realised how many there were. I was almost tempted to drop a star off the rating. However, the overall piece was enjoyable, and the errors fairly minor, that I decided to be generous and leave the rating as it is.

As usual, you can see my comments on Errors/Bug Bears on my actual Blog Post #379 September 2013.
