Time Crisis 3 15 Oct 2003
Time Crisis 3 is the latest installment of the Time Crisis series from Sony and Namco. Carrying on the original plot from previous Time Crisis games but this time with enhanced graphics, controls and weapons. With fast-paced shooting, action and heart pounding excitement this game delivers the needs of any die-hard light gun fan. It also boasts a new weapon mode and with the choice of hand gun, machine gun, shotgun and grenade launcher that are at your disposal waiting to be used to wipe out even the strongest enemies that face you. But as well as all this Sony have included the original arcade thriller 'Time Crisis' and new game modes that you can't find anywhere in the arcades and all this and more are delivered to your PS2. Also with the new arrival of two new characters: Alan Dunaway and Wesley Lambert. All this and more is included in Time Crisis 3 that has already delivered heart in mouth actions to thousands of people.

Time Crisis 3 is essentially an action packed shooting game, designed to be intense. From the opening sequence where you see two special agents luring the enemy to their boat, then taking off on speeders whilst a bomb is triggered is just fantastic, to the final dramatic showdown. This is great game.

A small army has taken control of a little island, and its up to you to rage a 2 man war against an entire army, including tanks, helicoptors etc. Cool.

Graphically, the island is beautiful, right from the start. You have the beach section, the train, and even the small village reminding you of a holiday resort. They are beautifully drawn and are graphically incredible. The enemies look just as good, however, their isn't much variety or difference in appearence (apart from colours which indicate the difficulty of the enemy.)

It is the gameplay that sets this apart. You are given in this bundle, a G-Con 2, (its brother was originally released with Time Crisis (1) on the PS1.) You calibrate the gun yourself, (i.e. shoot at a target which you feel is accurate.) This makes the gun as accurate (or unaccurate if you prefer) as you want it to be. Its pretty lightweight, and thankfully has no recoil feature (which tends to be the downside to most guns for the PS2, i.e. vibrates.) Now, the special thing are the buttons at the side, and underneath. By holding this, you are able to duck in game behind surroundings, whilst enemies attempt to attack you, and also reload. This makes it feel more realistic, and has huge appeal for gamers.

The gameplay takes you through some nice set situations, like a motorbike raid (everyone attempts to attack you on motorbikes) to boss battles on the back of a jeep, to a huge train section which results in you bailing for it before it plummets to the ground. The game also has a two player mode which is split screen, and a special character named Alicia who has a sniper rifle section in the game. A welcome addition is the ability to carry and use new weapons such as a shotgun, something which was absent from the original two Time Crisis games.

What lets this game down? Its a bit short (an hour to complete the main story) but then it is always something you'll go back and complete again at a later date (trust me.) Secondly, it will make your arms ache! Holding a gun up for such a long period of time is uncomfortable. However, these are minor faults, and do not condemn the game. This is one of the best light gun games on the market to date, everyone should own it.

Time Crisis 3 could easily be the best light gun game ever. The graphics are superb, the gameplay is fast-paced, and extremely addictive. The new weapon switching system works extremely well. As was Time Crisis 2, Time Crisis 3 on the PS2 is a perfect import from arcade to console.
Also, as well as the arcade mode in which you follow the story of either Alan Dunaway (Player 1) or Wesley Lambert (Player 2), you get a PS2 exclusive called "Rescue Mode" Which ties in nicely with arcade. In "Rescue Mode" you play as Alicia Winston, and as well as all the thrills arcade provides, this mode gives you new levels, new boses, and a new sniper system which works really well.
Downsides of this game: The two player mode is poor, it splits the screen down the middle but compresses it into a small box, so your shooting area is only 1/6th of the screen which makes it much less fun. However, two player action is superb with the link up mode, but this requires two TV's, two copies of the game and two consoles. Because its a light gun game, you really need to play it with a light gun, as it just doesnt feel right with the duel shock controller, so having a gun included in this package for its great price is fantastic.
Once you have cleared arcade and rescue mode, you unlock "crisis mission" mode, a series of short and often very challenging missions requiring you to fulfil specific objectives, such as kill a certain number of enemies in a very tight time limit with limited ammunition - not easy at times, believe me! Some of the later missions could drive you insane, but then again its nice to have a challenge no?
Final say, this game is a lot of fun, it looks good and plays better. And whilst it may only last you a few weeks in terms of replay value, those weeks will be well worth it.
