I recently saw Oberhofer in concert for the first time (more on that later), Afterwards I immediately checked out this album, which is the debut album from the New York band.
"Time Capsules II" (10 tracks; 38 min.) kicks off with "HEART", which is very representative of the entire album: light and quirky but with that certain appeal in it that makes you want to hear more. As I was listening to the album, I knew that this reminded me of some other band, and finally the name came to me: Aqueduct, which was a favorite band of mine around the time of their 2005 "I Sold Gold" album (whatever became of them anyway after 2007?). "Landmine" is a boisterous romper. "Away From U" (no typos!), continues the upbeat quirky songs. "oOoO" (try pronouncing that!) is an instrumental but for the repeat of the title of the song. "Cruising FDR" is a Beach Boys-like ode to cruising in your car, another highlight on the album. The 5+ min. "Haus" is by far the longest track on here, and equally good. The closing track "Homebro" is the only slower/pensive song on the album. In all, this is quite the album, although I have no idea why it's called "Time Capsules II", seemingly implying there is a Vol. I out there.
I saw the band in concert last month at the Bunbury music festival here in Cincinnati, where Brad Oberhofer and his band mates put on a very enjoyable set in the early evening on the second largest stage. They played most songs from this album. The band was fully energized and the crowd responded enthusiastically. If you have a chance to see them live, do not miss them! Meanwhile, "Time Capsules II" is definitely worth checking out.
