A real page turner 24 Feb 2005
Format:Paperback
I loved this book. Right from the start you are drawn in to the world of these kids in 1949. You can feel the heat of the summer, see the delights of the bomb site where they play. And you feel with them the series of blows that turn them from innocents into disillusioned kids who look for revenge. The book has got a great period detail but it is the characters and the screw-tight tension of the storyline that lingers in your mind. I couldn't put it down and I've been thinking about it ever since I've finished it. A rare treat.

Fabulous Read 28 July 2005
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is the best book I've read this year. I loved the characters who were all so sympathetically drawn. I also liked the setting in 1949. It was very interesting to learn about ordinary life for people back then. The book is marketed for children but I can recommend it for adults, too

I know that kids love this book (one in a long list of books from this author that are hugely appealing to kids)...the big surprise for me was how much I enjoyed it. This is a gem and deserves a very broad readership. The mood and details of place and time are perfect; they're richly evocative and expertly woven into the storytelling. I don't understand one of the reviewers on this site: from page one I was drawn to the vibrant young characters and their lives. It's not a simple story--as an adult reader I just loved the way the complex relationships between the adults and kids unfold. This is an emotionally honest book and therefore lingers on the mind for a long time. It's also as hugely entertaining--a real pager turner because of the plot. Even if you don't have a kid in the house pick this one up for yourself.
