Tim Minchin is a very talented musical comedian with lovely ginger hair and a nice smile. He hails from Australia, and is incredibly adept at blending music and comedy together. I like him quite a bit.
First of all, the bad. There is a little repetition in this DVD. A few of the songs ("Canvas Bags" and "Dark Side") appeared on his last DVD, and you've probably heard a few others, too ("If I Didn't Have You", "Not Perfect" and "Prejudice" weren't new to me). I would also go as far to say that some aren't Minchin's best work ("Confessions", "Bears Don't Dig on Dancing"). However, unlike most musical comedians, Tim Minchin will often place more emphasis on the music than the comedy. And it's okay for musicians to play their greatest hits, right?
Next up, the good. "Ready For This" has some *excellent* new material. You might not think you'd enjoy a 9-minute beat poem, but you *will* be surprised how fantastic they can be. "The Youtube Lament", "The Song For Phil Daost", and "The Good Book" are all superb little numbers too, but the absolute highlight is the closing number, "White Wine in the Sun". About the only song on the album that isn't strictly comedic just happens to be a charming Christmas epic, which deserves a lot more attention.
In conclusion: A solid DVD. Some retreading of old material, but definitely enough new material to make this a worthwhile watch.
