Amazon.co.uk Review

All actors have to try a mental-impairment role at some point in their careers (don't they?), and Mel Gibson took his best shot with this sweet film about a young retarded man and his gentle relationship with an older woman (Piper Laurie) who teaches him to read and to adjust to the real world. Tim's parents come to trust the woman's honourable intentions, but the movie still gives Mel's female fans a lot to swoon over; it's a platonic romance with plenty of temptation that is never acted upon. Add to that the fact that Gibson is really quite good in the title role--after Mad Max, this was Mel's first widely seen opportunity to prove himself in a dramatic role before his higher-profile roles in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior and Gallipoli. Tim is a bit too schmaltzy and sentimental, but this 1979 release has gained a loyal audience over the years, and the film has a lot more than just a young Mel Gibson to recommend it. --Jeff Shannon

Product Description

Tim (Mel Gibson) is a handsome young man with the intelligence and innocence of a child. Protected from the real world, Tim works as a builder's labourer and odd-job man when he meets Mary Horton (Piper Laurie), an older well-educated woman. The two strike-up an unusual friendship but one which begins to cause suspicion as Tim's friends and family begin to question Mary's intentions. Adapted from the novel by Colleen McCullough's, this film is a heart-warming love story that proves the old adage that love will conquer all .

One of Mel Gibsons least mentioned films, but in my opinion one of his best. He is very convincing as a child like young man who falls in love with an older woman and all the complications it brings for them. Has a wonderful Austrailian cast, especially the actors who play his parents. A must see film...fabulous!

A poignant story 5 Jan 2006
By A Customer
Format:DVD
This is one of my all time favourite films. Mel Gibson is simply excellent as Tim - a slow, un-educated but charming young man, brought up by a loving working-class family, desperate to protect him from the cruel ways of the world. He meets Mary, a lonely, middle-class businesswoman, just entering middle-age and they soon become inseparable. Whilst Tim's parents are grateful that someone like her should care for their son, Tim and Mary meet with prejudice from his sister Dawnie. Piper Laurie, as Mary gives a brilliant, understated performance as do the actors who play Tim's parents. All four main characters are beautifully portrayed and it's obvious from his performance that Mel Gibson was destined to go on to greater things.

Before Mel Gibson became the controversial director of the edgy hit, "The Passion of the Christ," he starred in an almost forgotten but award-winning 1979 movie, "Tim." It is an understated, yet excellently crafted love story.

Tim Melville has the innocence and desire to love of Forrest Gump, but is not the cartoon of a character as Tom Hanks portrayed. He lives with his soon-to-be-married sister and parents in a small, working class home.

Like in 1981's "Gallipoli," Gibson is a young Australian, complete with an accent. Here, he is a slow, but gentle laborer who does yard work for Mary, an older woman, played by Piper Laurie.

Slowly, they discover that although 20+ years separate them, they are falling love. His parents and sister protect him and want the best for him. They show mixed feelings about the relationship that Tim and Mary do not realize exists.

This is a romance, but it is also about the love of Tim's father for his son, and of the process of life. It is sad; expect tears to be shed.

We see Gibson in a role that highlights the working man, the need to respect and care for the mentally challenged, and the show the many layers of love in a family.

It is unrated, but probably deserves a PG rating. There's no profanity, violence or adult scenes. The audio is decent, but the video quality is lacking. The age of the original film shows some deterioration. There are no extras to speak of, except for a short bio of Gibson and Piper.

Delightful
I did not know what to expect but as a fan of early Mel Gibson I felt fairly confident. Well, what a delightful film - you need to ignore the fashion faux pas though! Read more

Worth every penny
This is the original film, as opposed to the later 'Mary and Tim' which is also great. Mel Gibson and Piper Laurie play great parts and are totally believable. I loved it.
