Book Description

5 July 2007 0753512785 978-0753512784

An authoritative guide to one of the most influential and resolutely maverick directors in modern Hollywood. Across all his full-length feature films in the last 36 years, Tim Burton has demonstrated versatility without sacrificing the thematic and stylistic unity of his work. From his surprising career start as an animator at Disney, Smith and Matthews look at the diverse film projects that Tim Burton has been involved in, including the striking Batman and Sleepy Hollow to the smaller, more personal Ed Wood.

It is the personal mark Burton makes upon a film that identifies him as one of contemporary cinema's visionaries. Featuring a range of old and new interviews with key figures, contemporary criticism and a look at Burton's forgotten piece, Luau, this is a crucial release for Burton fans and anyone interested in the creation of unorthodox mainstream cinema.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, but not definite book on Burton 12 Jan 2004
Format:Paperback
This book by Smith and Matthews, while decidedly not the "ultimate Tim Burton-book" (that would still be Mark Salisbury's "Burton on Burton"), is still a rather impressive piece of work. The amount of research that has gone into it is certainly evident, resulting in comments and analyses of Burton's filmography that are sound and solid. The writing is also good, flowing well and providing for an easy and enjoyable read.

There are, however, a few, minor quibbles.

First of all, the authors appear rather too fixated on shooting down Ken Hanke, author of "Tim Burton: An Unauthorized Biography". They never ever let a chance to put him down pass them by, and after a while it does get a bit tiresome. If criticizing other authors is so important, why not also dish out some to Helmut Merschmann, who, after all, offers up a plethora of wildly unfounded claims in his rather inept (and slim) view of Burton in "Tim Burton: The Life and Films of a Visionary Director"?

Secondly, the book could have benefitted from some more proofreading, as a few errors crept through. A few examples: Spider-Man is referred to as Spiderman, and that spooky-sounding classic instrument, the theremin, is consistently misspelled as "theramin."

Still, these are minor points. This is definitely a book worth getting for people interesting learning more about this exciting director. The entry on "Luau" alone marks this as a must-have for any Burton-fan. But get "Burton on Burton" first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tim Burton 9 Aug 2002
Format:Paperback
Though not exactly what I'd hoped for, this book is still one of the best available about Tim Burton. Mainly biographical, it focuses mainly on his film, artistic and literary work.

Tim Burton is basically quite dark. His work focuses mainly on Gothic and the darker side of human nature (Batman), usually with twisted humour (The Nightmare Before Christmas). This details his life, using both interviews and the authors experiences with him.

It also contains excerpts from his stories and his art, which are very impressive and enchanting. In short, Tim Burton is one of the best artists of our times - very interesting and well worth reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great book 21 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
...This book is extremely well-researched and detailed, and if there's any factual errors I certainly didn't spot any.

As a long-time Burton fan I found this book extremely absorbing, it's definitely a must for any fan of the director's work. This detailed and comprehensive book shows a level of care and attention to detail sadly lacking in many film crit books, not to mention unearthing lots of previously unknown anecdotes and facts. Well worth it for Burton fans and film students alike. It looks like there's several books in this series, so on the strength of this I'm definitely going to have a look to see what other film books they've done.
