Product Description

The third book in the acclaimed Tillerman Series, Jeff must choose between his mother and his father in this atmospheric story, set in America’s Deep South.

Jeff is abandoned by his mother Melody. He grows up instead with his dusty old father, whom he knows only as the Professor. When Melody reappears in Jeff’s life and invites him to stay for the summer, Jeff’s world is alight with happiness. But Melody is never there, and Jeff is as lonely as ever. Maybe the Professor isn’t as dusty as Jeff had always imagined. But maybe, like the solitary blue heron, it is wisest never to get too close to anyone…

This book looks at the story of a young boy faced with his parents seperation. It is linked to the other Cynthia Voight stories about Dicey and her family. Jeffrey goes through his parents separation, his father's apparent aloofness and his mother's inconsistent love. He doesn't sail through, this is no fairy story, but it is a lovely piece of fiction, charting one child's progress in growing up. I have loved this book since I was a child struggling myself, and I still enjoy it today.

Voigt's Best. 25 Nov 2007

I like all the Tillerman books, and the one's linked to the Tillermans, but I think this is the best of them all.

Jeff has a lot to deal with when his mother leaves him as a young boy, because she feels called to help all the other unhappy children in the world!! The story follows Jeff as he works things out - his relationships with his mother and father, his school life, his interests - and ends up balanced and with healthy perspectives. There's a lot of outdoorness and descriptions of nature in the book - the solitary blue of the title is a blue heron - and this adds to the general attractiveness of this story. Also, there are wise grown ups in it, such as Jeff's father and his father's friend, a priest. These grownups have their own troubles - who can escape that - but they provide solid support for Jeff.

This review doesn't in the least capture what a wonderful book this is, but I strongly recommend it, especially for teenagers. It's a really good companion for the teenage years.
