This film is extraordinary because of the tremendous talent that it encapsulates. The scenes are a tapestry of colour, music, song and dance on a scale long gone.

Although the acting and story (it was not really a factually correct biography of Kern) appear dated, this is not what the film is about. It's a showboat of some of the greatest show songs and singers America ever produced and on this count it does not disappoint - not by a long shot. This film contains wonderful performances by Judy, Angela, Frank and June that cannot be missed or ignored.

Unfortunately, the picture and sound quality is the poorest I have ever seen on a DVD and I can only imagine what a proper restoration will do for this treasure chest of colour and song.

"This large-scale Technicolor musical is one of those over-the-top, maximalistic productions that the Golden Age of the Studio System was famous for!" - right, what's written in synopsis is absolutelty true.

The problem however is that you won't see and hear it with this DVD item in your player, looking like transferred from 20th copy of 20th VHS copy or recorded directly from screen with an amateur camera. Nothing surprising, as "Till The Clouds Roll By" are - similarly to eg. "Royal Wedding" - the victim of its public domain status, meaning that the original owner (MGM) doesn't see any interest and reasons to invest in launching restored version of the movie.

It's a pity, as although far from being a masterpiece (with screenplay and dialogues reaching the very bottom from time to time), the item contains a couple of musical numbers cast and staged with quality much above average for most of other mid-40s musicals (though, to be frank, many of Kern's songs do not quite pass the test of time).

The 1-star rating applies to the issue, not the film itself, which otherwise I would personally rate as circa 3-star.

As a collector of film musicals, I recently bought the DVD "Till the clouds roll by" with Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra a. o. The quality of the film copy was worse than bad! Even if it was a film from 1946, it can not be that out of focus and over-colored! I have seen films that are older than this, that is in clear, sharp picture quality and good colors. So, don't buy this DVD. Even if it's cheap, it is not worth the money. I threw it in the garbage can.

Judy's numbers amazing!
The plot is not a masterpiece, but the numbers are beautiful. Especially those of Judy Garland. Here, too, shows the queen of the musical. Others not appear when she is! Read more

Psychedelic to Sepia, and back, with added sugar !
I'm not a Kern fanatic, however, this edition would dispirit the most hardened enthusiast.

This could be a wonderful film - but the reason I've given it three stars is because there is something lacking. Read more
