Product Description

Product Description

Maggie McCune was born in India during the last vestiges of the British Raj. Her daughter, Emma, whose passion for Africa led her to aid work in Sudan where she fell in love with and married a guerrilla commander of the Sudan People's Liberation Army, died in a car accident when only 29 and expecting her first baby.
TILL THE SUN GROWS COLD weaves together their stories: the bereaved mother trying to make sense of her daughter's brief, colourful existence through Emma's writing and diaries, and discovering much about herself as she revisits their shared and separate pasts.

About the Author

Maggie McCune was born in Quetta, India, in 1942. Maggie's career, apart from bringing up her four children single-handedly, has included a variety of jobs in a school, a fine art auctioneer and a publishing house.

Essential reading 5 Oct 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I originally read this first as a book from my local library. I could not put it down, and subsequently purchased three copies for myself and my sisters. A truly emotional and inspiring book written with such depth of feeling. As a mother of three daughters it was so easy to understand and feel all the emotions expressed by Maggie McCune in her book, from the opening, through her own amazing life story on to her daughters short, courageous, at times rash, but extraordinary life story. I could not put it down, it never disappointed me through to the 'twist' at the end. Although extremely sad, Maggie McClune has written it in a positive and hopeful way which has obviously helped her to come to terms with her daughters untimely death as well as allowing the reader to enjoy and admire the courage of both the author and her daughter. Any individual with children of her own especially today, when young people have the opportunity to travel so widely, will admire and thoroughly enjoy this book. I can honestly say I have recommended this to so many of my friends and no one has been disappointed. I cannot recommend it strongly enough.

I can't review this book, the first copy never turned up from Eaglebooks Ltd and the second book they promised me on 29th September, has not turned up either. I have sent an email to you for you to forward to Eagle Books regarding this - and would like to know how to cancel the order so that I can start again and get another copy??

This book seems not to be written for an audience or readership. They are secondary McCune's purpose, which is to explore the turbulent events of her own life and that of her daughter Emma. As such one feels slightly voyeuristic being allowed to share in her personal catharsis, but at the same time interested in their facinating story. Occasionally McCune's lack of experience as an author seems obvious. Her liberal use of literary quotes to illustrate aspects of the text were irritating, and did not have the same relevance for me as they apparently did for her. However, this did not detract from her ability to tell the story, which is delivered with a mix of admirable honesty and the inevitable bias of a mother describing the life of her much loved daughter.

The lives of both Maggie and Emma are unusual and at times incredible. The experience of reading their story will reduce most people to tears of sadness and empathy. One is filled with admiration for the difficulties faced and overcome by Maggie, and for the ambition and charisma of Emma. The difference between mother and daughter is that Maggie had things happen to her, and Emma made things happen to her. In her desire to attract and be at the centre of attention Emma was irresponsible and careless. The outcome of her life was not a surprise.
