Product Description

Product Description

Football, friends, and film are the most important parts of Simon Murray's life, likely in that order. Despite being lonely, Simon is cautious about looking for more, and his best friends despair of him ever finding that special someone to share his life. Against his will, they drag him to a party, where Simon barges into a football conversation and ends up defending the honour of star forward Declan Tyler -- unaware that the athlete is present and listening. Like his entire family, Simon revels in living in Melbourne, Victoria, the home of Australian Rules football and mecca for serious fans. There, players are deemed gods and treated as such - until they do something to cause them to fall out of public favour. Declan is suffering a horrendous year of injuries, and the public is taking him to task for it, so Simon's support is a bright spot in his struggles. In that first awkward meeting, neither man has any idea they will change each other's lives forever. As Simon and Declan fumble toward building a relationship together, there is yet another obstacle in their way: keeping Declan's homosexuality a secret amidst the intrusion of well-meaning friends and an increasingly suspicious media. They realise that nothing remains hidden forever... and they know the situation will only become more complicated when Declan's private life is revealed. Declan will be forced to make some tough choices that may result in losing either the career he loves or the man he wants. And Simon has never been known to make things easy - for himself or for others.

wonderful book... 16 April 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a rare thing these days - a gay romance that is intelligent, funny and totally absorbing from start to finish. It is a work of total quality and I loved it. I really enjoyed the humour and warmth shared between the characters - lovers and friends. They cared for each other (although often they screwed up their interaction) and I cared about them. The storyline was ultra-romantic (to my view) yet contemporary and with a hard-edge running through it when the forces of the "real" world (media, big-business sport & even family) threaten to tear apart our heros. And what heros we have here in Simon & Declan - totally different, totally believable & totally lovable!
Finally, the book was incredibly sexy without containing a single line of graphic sexual description.
Apparently this is a first novel from Mr Kennedy - bravo to you sir! To the rest of you reading this - buy it and enjoy the treat!

A great read 18 May 2009
By K. Rush
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'm glad I followed the advice of the first reviewer and bought this: it made a 2 hour car journey pass in no time and I did not want to put it down. You get drawn into it even if you know nothing about football. The story is romantic and sexy without being crude. The dialogue is well written and had me laughing out loud (more snark than Rodney Mckay for those who are slash fanfiction fans). The lovers' situation is portrayed in a believable way, showing that mutual attraction but frequent miscommunication can be as much of an obstacle as big business interests and the need for secrecy. Their relationships with friends and family give them support and problems in equal measure. When one hero is the out and proud organiser of a film festival with a fear of showing his real feelings and the other is a closeted Aussie rules football player, are they going to stand a chance of long term happiness? You'll have fun finding out.

WOW ! What a read ! 29 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
Once started I could not put this book down; I read it again from the start immediately after the first read. I could not fault this book in any way. The characters were believable, and I was amazed about how involved I became with them in a short period of time.
I agree with one of the other reviewers in that this book is crying out to be made in to a tv mini series. I have not enjoyed a book like this as much since the last of the Tales in the City series. I look forward to more from this author.
For those interested, if you go to the author's website you can get a short story based on the novel, set during the timeline of the book; have not read it yet but looking forward to it.

To summarise, a fantastic book that deserves to be read by all.
