Novella: 29300 words

Melissa Stark will take on just about any job as long as the price is right. But this particular job she would gladly take on for free because Captain Zachary Knight has been a thorn in her side ever since she stole his starship ten years ago.

Back then he was a genuine hero and poster boy for the army's hybrid breeding program. Now things have changed. Zach has been accused of a massacre on the planet of Talmare and is being shipped home to stand trial. But certain influential people want to make sure Zach never reaches Earth and Mel and her crew on The Revenge have been hired to intercept him and return him to Talmare.

It should have been easy money. The problem is, Zach is impossible to resist and once Mel gets her hands on him she's doesn't want to let him go. Now those same people are also after Mel.

Mel and her female crew of space pirates have been outmanoeuvring Zachary Knight for 10 years. The tiger hybrid military hero has had a gripe with Mel since she stole his starship; however by their next meeting his reputation has been destroyed. Charged with the slaughter of countless men, women and children, Zach is cryogenically frozen and on his way to Earth to face a trial for his crimes when Mel and her motley crew step in. Paid to deliver him to the real bad guy, Zach is only too aware if he can't escape or convince Mel and the other women he is innocent of his supposed crimes then he's a dead man. His plan is to seduce Mel and gain her help, but he doesn't anticipate a telepath spilling the beans, and he certainly doesn't anticipate falling in love.

The relationship between Mel and Zach works well and is certainly very heated in places, plus Mel's interaction with her crew is feisty and humorous at times. The futuristic environment, technology and different races are well done, but overall I felt the story line could have been more dramatic and thrilling. Also, I would have enjoyed more personal history on Mel and her female crew as the brief snippets only whetted the appetite rather than sated it.

Ten years ago, ex-space age brothel interns, Mel and her cohorts, tricked Zach, an army-created tiger hybrid, out of his ship. In the time since, he's gone from being the army golden boy to an outlaw, and Mel, Leila and Darla are pirates who're being paid to bring him in. His violent, immoral, crimes and nature are legend, or so they are made to believe...

Though we don't get told much about the brothel, it seems to be a futuristic way of keeping non-human females under control, and the girls escaped as soon as they could, having been captured and imprisoned whilst barely teens. When they capture Zach, it becomes clear that there's more to their mission than they've been told and that there's something unfinished between him and Mel.

This was an OK tale, but I think it must be one of a series, as it ended with the crew going on another mission. It was a little slow for the storyline, but it did have some interesting elements and I would certainly read more in the series, if offered for free. I liked the characters, who were certainly interesting, and how Zach told Mel that her experiences in the brothel counted for nothing, and that their first time was her first time as far as he was concerned. When it happened, the sex was hot (there was an aborted scene early in the tale), and strangely romantic. But, it should have been a little more in depth, faster-paced and with a touch more danger and intrigue to make it really good. The author could have done that easily with a longer tale.

Overall, it was OK for a one-off freebie read, but not inspiring or good enough that I felt the need to track down more about the author or whether more will follow.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed what there is of it 5 Feb 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
This was a fun, steamy little read and I almost gave it 4 stars. I really did enjoy it. It's well written, had a number of laugh out loud moments, and a couple yummy scenes. But then I started thinking about everything it didn't have. At 109 pages it is admittedly a novella, not a novel. But it should still have a whole story, shouldn't it? This feels like someone took a larger space opera - about a honourable captain who encounters a nefarious plan to take over the galaxy involving telepathic freighter pilots (very reminiscent of Herbert's Spice Guild I thought), is rescued from his fate (sort of) by a notorious female pirate, saves the cosmos, clears his name, and falls in love - and then simply snipped out the romance bits for presentation here. 10 years pass between chapter one and two, then the rest of the book passes in less than a week. The fact that Zach is a tiger hybrid is irrelevant and only address ascetically. We never really know why or how he fell from grace. We're just told that he did. Don't get me wrong. I'm not trashing the book. I enjoyed the two hours it took me to read. I just would have really liked the rest of it too.
