Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

While Electronic Arts’ other sports games may be locked in a deadly rivalry with their competitors there really hasn’t been a golf sim to go head-to-head with Tiger Woods for years. There doesn’t seem to be too much laurel sitting going on though, especially since this is, like many Electronic Arts games this year, the first time the game has been designed specifically with the next generation of consoles in mind. Naturally that means the most realistic graphics yet, not only for the course itself but also for Tiger and the other real-world golfers. Their faces and expressions look totally life-like and on the PS3 and 360 you can use a webcam or digital camera to import your own face and graft it to your own in-game custom golfer.

In terms of gameplay the major new feature is the concept of "shot confidence" which monitors your performance through your whole career, adding an extra degree of tension to difficult shots but also allowing you to examine your game in detail to find out where you’re going right and wrong. After criticisms that last year’s game was a bit thin on options this new game has the greatest number of courses ever including Westchester Country Club, TPC Boston, Cog Hill and East Lake. There’s also the expanded GamerNet mode which acts like a sort of YouTube just for the game, allowing you post in-game videos and challenge other people to a game in an online world dedicated to nothing but golf.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best golf game on the DS, 4 Sep 2007

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
When the Nintendo DS was first launched, Electronic Arts was right there at the start of the system with a dual screen version of its Tiger Woods series. The game was clearly rushed through development - bland visuals, short feature list, and arguably poor use of the touch screen for the various ways to swing at the ball. EA gave Tiger Woods a long rest for the next couple of years, and boy did that help!! Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 on the DS may not have the same "oomph" in presentation as the console versions, but the leap it made from the original launch title concept is huge. Better visuals, tons of features and options, far more complete use of the touch screen. And yes, fantastic focus on the multiplayer aspect.

It's hard to point out the biggest change in this sequel because, obviously, everything's been changed. The DS swing mechanic, originally a clunky "trace the line" idea in the first game, has been reworked to feel more natural, much like the "pull back, flick forward" of the analog stick on the consoles. This is all handled by a visual engine that pushes 3D to both screens. And even though the game may focus on the touch-screen play right up front, the developers haven't forgotten about the traditionalist gamers who might prefer the more basic timing-based click control mechanics of other golf games. You know the type: tap the button to start the swing, tap it again to set the power, and a final tap for accuracy. That's in here. By default you've got the "natural" touch swing, but poking around the options menu you can toggle between that and the traditional click swing.
Much of the core Tiger Woods gaming components are here in the Nintendo DS edition as well. Just want to hit a course? You can do it. Want to practice a single hole? Not a problem. Want to play some fun little mini-games based around all the gameplay mechanics like driving, chipping, and putting? You got it. Want to take your skills on the road in a scheduled PGA Tour career, complete with calendar to select the particular venues? Here you go. And yes, you can create your own character's look and customise his abilities with earned funds from the single player challenges.

I'm not ignoring the fact that there's still room for improvement in Tiger Woods PGA Golf 2008 on the Nintendo DS, because there certainly is. I'm just incredibly impressed with the leap the series has made on the dual-screen handheld. If it's done right, golf makes for a great handheld experience due to its pick-up-and-play style - play a hole, put the system away, pick it up again, play another hole, put it away again. Tiger Woods 2008 understands this and retains this element, while offering a ton of options to keep things from getting too repetitive. Lots of mini-games, lots of challenges...and the multiplayer focus -- offline and online -- is too great to ignore

4.0 out of 5 stars So addictive!, 1 Oct 2007

Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought this game last week. I was dubious about how good the game would be on a handheld console. The graphics aren't the greatest, but the gameplay is superb! The person who said he won the first tournament with his first go must either be a genius, or has used a preloaded character (likely to be the latter). If you start off with a newly created character and want to build up your profile, you are guaranteed hours of play and many struggles along the way!

Swinging with the stylus also works so well. Its as good, if not better than using a playstation 2 controller. This was my main worry about the game, but I was pleasantly surprised.

There are a couple of things to iron out with the game; The sound isn't great. There's no music, and when you hit an iron it has the sound of a wood! I know its only a small point, but still is worth noting!

Overall, a really good game. Its so playable, and simple to use. I would definitely recommend it.
