Amazon.co.uk Review

Whether your video-golf ability classifies you as tour-hardened pro or weekend duffer, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2002 provides ample opportunity to refine and enhance your strengths. Gone is the swing power meter in favour of EA Sports' new Total Precision Swing. Essentially, the golfer on screen is your real-time power meter; you now have the ability to control his or her entire motion from backswing to follow-through. Power drives, insane-angle slices, fading hooks, and more can all be executed with the proper touch. And while the Total Precision Swing's learning curve is steep, it does add new flavour to the game.

Among the new game modes are the Tiger Challenge and Speed Golf. In the Tiger Challenge, you compete as Woods against a progression of 17 players--some PGA Tour players and some original EA Sports characters--to earn cash rewards and the right to unlock hidden golfers. You can also unlock individual holes on Tiger's Dream 18, a course designed by Woods himself. Speed Golf mode features a fast and furious race to the hole in which you can either compete by yourself or split-screen against another player. Money is earned in head-to-head competition by finishing the hole first, and through bonuses for such things as teeing off first and hitting a longer drive than your opponent. Any money earned is subsequently drained from your opponent's total, creating all-out mayhem on the course. Other game modes offer stroke, match, and tournament play, skins, scenarios, and practice. Also, Play Now mode places you in a helpful scenario/tutorial situation that you must complete before moving on to further options.

Visually, the game's many courses and related elements depict a stunning, near-live experience. From the well-kept fairways and greens of Pebble Beach and the TPC at Sawgrass, to the otherworldly dazzle of Copperhead Canyon, the courses come alive with rainy mists, murky fogs, and glowing sunsets. Also enhancing the experience are crashing ocean waves, rippling lakes, swaying tree branches, and even live animals should you knock a shot into the trees. --Larry White

Product Description

With a bevy of pro golfers walking some of the most beautiful courses ever made, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2002 brings the great game to your fingertips. A brand new game engine delivers even more realistic graphics and physics. Take your game to world-renowned courses like Pebble Beach Golf Links, TPC at Sawgrass, and Royal Birkdale, as well as custom-designed courses. All-new Total Precision Swing lets you slice, draw, or drive it straight and true. There is also a two-player, split-screen competition that's a high-speed race to the hole: you've got to rip it, run after it, then rip it again.

I'm Tiger Woods 8 July 2002

This game is insane. The best golf game I have ever played. Including all of the previous EA golf incarnations on Megadrive, PS1 etc.

Graphically the game is superb, the courses look great and the players features, movement etc is very realistic. Sound is also excellent. But these are nothing compared to the playability. Swing is controlled through the analogue stick, and this makes for the most realistic simulated golf controls I have ever come across. You need to be precise if you want to hit the fairway, but with practice you can deliberately hook or slice to get round tight dog-legs etc.

There are loads of courses / players / tournaments to unlock, which will keep you occupied for weeks. The career feature is superb - first you earn your card by completing a 10 minute training excersise. Then as you progress and win money, you can beef up your stats. You can really see the improvement in your golfer and of course, as a better player you can enter more lucrative competitions. This feature seems to draw heavily from the Tony Hawk Skater career mode, and it is perfectly suited to this game.

There is so much going on in this game. Putts for the lead or a big approach shot are accompanied by a thumping heart beat and the controller actually vibrates in time with the heartbeat to simulate nerves. Big drives are shown in slow - mo for dramatic effect etc.

Put simply - the presentation is arcade, the playability is simulation. A perfect blend for a perfect game.

Buy it.

And I am not even a massive golf fan.

I play a lot of golf my-self but most golf games lack that fun that golf provides me; when I picked up this game my views changed they have created the greatest golf game of all time. You can but draw spin on the ball and fade making it very realistic. It does not stop there you can also make your own course!!! It really is superb I will certainly be buying it!

Probably because I'm not a very good real-life golfer, i've always enjoyed golf simulation games - and I've played loads. Put simply, this is the very best yet!
However, not only is it a really good real-life simulation, with great courses, graphics and perfect ball physics, but it's got enough arcade pizzazz and drama to be hugely engrossing and entertaining from the moment you get through the 5 minute training exercise at the start (a nice touch). I particularly like the 'gamebreaker' modes, which feature a heartbeat, vibrating controller etc which pulls you into the tension at crucial points, and getting rid of an trace of a silly power meter is a masterstroke (groan)- the new analog stick swing is really accurate and intuitive - far more like real golf than just clicking buttons at the right time.
Another big plus for me is that it is sooo damn rewarding. You earn money (as well as trophy balls and tour cards) for almost anything you do well: green in regulation, birdies, close approach, longest putt, winning a tournament....you unlock new golfers, new holes, new courses...the list goes on and on. The money you earn can then also be used to improve your player attributes (power, accuracy, approach, putting, spin etc) ready for your next challenge. You can even save your best shots. It's just brilliant! I've had the game a week and I just can't stop playing it!
The only thing that slightly irritates is that you only get a very short time to decide if you want a replay of your shot. By the time you've puffed out your chest at your brilliance, the opportunity is gone. But that's a small gripe.
For me, the real proof of the pudding is that my wife, a hardened non-golfer, has been playing along with me and thoroughly enjoying herself! What an achievement!
Oh, and the commentary on this game is not particularly irritating! That's a first!
Buy, buy, buy!
