Product Description

Review

"This book is a must have for all avid modellers of the Tiger tank regardless of the scale. It provides a 'one stop shop' resource for anyone wanting to find out the details of the Tiger Heavy tank and the differences between the variations throughout the Second World War." -Jeremy Wee, "Armorama "(October 2006)

Product Description

Probably the most famous tank of the World War II, the Tiger I was originally conceived in 1941 in response to the German Army's experience in fighting British tanks and anti-tank guns in Western Europe and the North African desert. Following the invasion of Russia, the appearance of the Soviet T-34 and KW tanks lent a further impetus to the programme. The Tiger's power and performance on the battlefield is emphasised by tables of relevant performance throughout the book, which clearly show the battlefield survivability of the Tiger and its superiority to many allied tank designs. This comprehensive and extremely detailed text is accompanied by a fine selection of black and white photographs showing the tank in use.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad for Modellers, but excellent for the Historian., 21 Nov 1999
This review is from: Tiger 1 (Osprey New Vanguard) (Paperback)
This book succeeds in conveying a potted history of this formidable tank. It covers both the design and construction of the type as well as detailing the numerous variants which stemmed from the original Tiger 1.

Equally important for both the historian and the modeller is the history of service covering various units and theatres of operation. Firepower, mobility and battlefield survivability are all covered, though not in any great depth.

Overall the book is reasonably well balanced in its presentation of the subject, but seems to be a little too short to do it justice. I feel slightly let down by the publisher though the book still warrants four stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its alright I guess, 7 Jan 2012
This review is from: Tiger 1 (Osprey New Vanguard) (Paperback)
Not to long ago I bought a new vanguard book about british battleships, it was a suprising read packed with more detail than you would expect from 48 pages about 2 different ships and was concise and accurate so far as I know.

So I bought this book expecting much the same (not bearing in mind that they are written by different authors) and I suppose I got the same thing but it was a little disappointing.

Just as the previous book I read it is packed with detail but not necessarily as much as I would like. Where as in battleships (1) you got the impression of lots of detail, including service history summary, the author making full use of his 48 page limit but in this book you get the sense the author felt a little pressured to mention everything.

The result is a book that doesnt feel as in depth as it should do. I would expect a book of such short legnth to give the majority of its space to details about the tank itself (influences on design, adavantages of design, gun performance and such and disadvanages as well as why it wasnt ultimately a war winner) and its service history to give an impression how they performed in the field as with the previously mentioned book did with its two battleships. But it feels to me the author starts the book spending to much time telling you about the fairly turbulant production history of the tank, which although interesting is a subject that I feel deserves its own book and a handful of pages cant convey adequatly.

Of course he does talk about the tanks design and performance, including design and firepower, which are an informative read but you dont really get a sense of detail and depth from these sections, each of which is VERY short.

A summary of service history is also included but it again feels like the author is trying to hard to stuff everything in rather than concentrating on units of particular note he seems to try and concentrate on as many units as he can fit and the result is yet again another interesting but ultimately not indepth enough summary which doesnt really give you any interesting information about the tanks performance.

He also has made a few irritating spelling and grammer mistakes that the publisher hasnt picked up on and for no particularly good reason that I can phathom, he keeps using german phrases for words (such as periscope) and what I presume are the code names of organisations involved in its ordering and deployment which can actually throw you off when you come across them and are completely unnecessary.

If he had spend less space writing about the tanks production history and dedicated more of it to the tank itself and perhaps particularly note worth parts of its service history, rather than just snippets, I feel the book would be worth 5 stars.

Still as it is if you have a spare tenner and you want a good read about the tiger, but dont expect masses of depth then this is a good book to purchase. Its just ashame that with better management of space and priority on subjects this book could have been special like many of the new vanguard series but as it is its just a "good" purchase.
