Book Description

7 April 2011
Written with honesty and humour, this is the engaging story of Tiff Needell's life around cars and motor racing. For nearly 25 years Tiff has been a well-known television personality, first on Top Gear - where he worked alongside Jeremy Clarkson - and then on Channel Five's Fifth Gear. Besides this, Tiff had an incredibly varied and long motor racing career that saw him race in the Monaco Grand Prix and escape unharmed from a horrific 200mph crash at Le Mans. He tells it all with pace and style in a book that all car enthusiasts will relish.

5.0 out of 5 stars Petrolhead Heaven! Brilliant 11 April 2011
By John Richard VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This is one for the petrol-head of a certain age. If you were smitten by motor sport at an early age, during the golden age of racing during the sixties and seventies when it was exclusive, dangerous, totally thrilling, and you hung about at race tracks idolising your your heroes, then Tiff is one of us. He got lucky by winning a Formula Ford car in a magazine competition and got to live the dream even though he was not from a wealthy family, the unfortunate requirement for the majority who get to be racers, then as now. Fair enough, he encountered a huge amount of disappointment in his varied career, but is realistic enough to appreciate that he was luckier than millions but unluckier than a few. Certainly one of the most absorbing books I have ever read on the subject, even though there seems to some clumsy editing in parts. Absolutely loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! 9 May 2011
This book took me on a journey through Tiff's life, from racing boats to winning some 'little' prize in an Autosport competition, all the way to nearly getting that prized F1 drive (Damn those French regulators) and finally getting the drive at the top level of motorsport, to becoming a TV presenter. What a fantastic life and a fantastic book!
Thank you Tiff, since reading this I have booked a drive in a Formula Challenge to see how I go, maybe I'll be in F1 in a few years!

5.0 out of 5 stars Tiffs Story 9 May 2011
Amazing story of determination and nearly getting to the top. An ideal guide for talented people who give up when it all seems to be going against you. I'd recommend this story to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking good read 20 Jun 2011
Tiff Gear made my holiday! I sat alongside a pool in Portugal and couldn't put the book down. Why? I've followed Tiff's career since he won the Autosport Competition - and the Lotus Formula Ford prize - and I didn't! To fully understand after all those years that although coming from Weybridge he didn't have large wealth but has instead grafted his way through the rungs of motor sport to F1 and beyond was fascinating. This book is well written in a modest style. His more recent career in TV is covered and don't we all think it is a five-star lifesytle? Tiff reveals the truth. If only more autobiographies could be like this.

I've met (briefly) Tiff a couple of times and he seems to be a genuinely nice bloke (not all racing drivers are, in my experience) who really is the 'happy-go-lucky' bloke you see on TV.

Of course, like some of the other reviewers, I remember when he was a real contender for 'next best thing' in F1, but without the grooming of MerClaren or the luck of Mansell and Hill, he never quite made it.

This book covers his 'almost making it' career with the mild-disbelief and good humour I've come to expect of Tiff. I've not quite finished it yet, but over the 4 days of the Easter break I've read two-thirds and that's a great credit to the book as I rarely read this much so quickly.

I was at a lot of the races (F3, Group C, BMW County Championship, Saab Turbos!) that Tiff talks about, so it's as much a trip down memory lane for me as it is the story of his life.

He talks a lot of sense about Motor Racing and how it's change too, or so it seems to me.

Great book for anyone who likes Tiff's TV persona, Group C or a story of battling against the odds and, overall, coming out on top.

Tiff Gear? Top Read!
