This book is aimed at people who are interested in sadomasochism (SM), both as an activity and as a lifestyle. The author is a gay man, so the style of the book particularly suits gay men, but the content can be applied to anyone involved in SM activity or the Dominant/submissive lifestyle.

I liked this book a lot. It deals with Master/slave and SM scenes and relationships, discusses the problems people sometimes face, and suggests practical strategies for avoiding or solving them, drawing on the author's experience as a counsellor to people who are involved in SM. It works on the premise that SM relationships can suffer the same problems as vanilla relationships, with additional issues caused by the SM content. The book does not contain technical information about how to "do" SM activities (there are plenty of other books for that).

It is an intelligent analysis of SM in the real world.

There were only two flaws I could find. Firstly it is US-centric (not surprising as the author is American, but he could consider removing some of the US-specific references or explaining them.) Secondly, the book was first published in 1993 and now seems slightly dated. It would be great if there could be a new edition which updated the original and covered things such as the Internet. Neither of these flaws detracts from the usefulness of the content, however.
