Product Description

"Tom Bielawski is a bright light in today's dark sea of new writers. His writing gives me hope for the next generation of dreamers. I highly recommend both him and his works." - NYT Bestselling author, Tracy Hickman.

Carym of Hyrum is a respected village hero. That is until he is wrongly accused of rebellion and murder. Saved from execution at the hands of the authorities by the very band of rebels he despises, Carym must risk everything to repay the criminals for his freedom by undertaking a dangerous quest for a vial of water from the mythical Everpool.

Meanwhile, a dark wizard in league with the evil god, Umber, leads an army bent on the conquest of the entire Northern Continent. He, too, seeks the Everpool, but for far more sinister purposes and his powerful minions hunt Carym at every turn.

A shake up is occurring in the heavens as the offspring of the Father God war with each other and with Him for dominance over the peoples of Llars.

In order to reach the Everpool Carym must learn to deal with his new powers, dodge monstrous hunters, guard against betrayal, and resist the evil temptations that threaten to overwhelm him like a Tide of Shadows.

Newly revised 3rd edition. Estimated page count is 400.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Tide of Shadows 18 Feb 2013

This book is released as an Epic Fantasy and it is certainly long enough to qualify. This is a book full of paradoxes - it is good but not good enough to pull me back for the second book; the hero is interesting but also quite dull at times; his best friend just comes across as being quite whiney and hasn't shared a lot of his life with his "best" friend. There are a lot of twists and turns in this book and people aren't always what you think they are. Although there is a lot of detail in this book, there are areas where not much is given although I think this will be embellished in the further books.

An interesting storyline which was enjoyable but just not enough to buy the second.

5.0 out of 5 stars Much better than I expected 11 Feb 2012

I can't understand the negative reviews for this book. Sure, it's not perfect; but no book is.

Pros: Good plot given that it's basically about a quest. The characters are individuals, not races. You are served up some delightful action and adventure. By the middle of the book the characters have started to develop and the really fantastic aspects of the world are starting to be explored.

Cons: The plot is indeed slow at beginning, and it is a long book. It's not a page-turner at the start, but if you stick it out you will be rewarded. It needs further editing is some places. The mix of modern terminology is a little distracting, but it is not so prevalent, nor egregious, as another review suggested.

If you enjoy an epic quest, then I recommend that you give this book a chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book - keeps you thinking throughout a very long story 29 Dec 2011

There are a billion fantasy novels out there, and it seems like with kindle online publishing, that there are 10 new ones every day.

Certainly, at 99 cents, and just a few reviews - there is little to indicate this novel in particular is worth getting.

Let me convince you:
- It's really really long (fantasy requires immersion, fantasy usually focuses around world building and character building, the longer books tend to do better and this book is about 2-3 times your normal book length).
- It stays interesting throughout....the characters are always moving and there are new challenges and puzzles while staying within an overall theme, and the plot does make measurable progress rather than just wandering around just for fun.
- The people in the story seem fully real, and the main character has the key attributes of being likable but flawed, but willing to grow.
- The story while fantastical has real directness, there are no magical saves....everything must be worked for, when things go well - there is a price to be paid, good isn't all good and bad isn't all bad, the main guy isn't so stupid that he doesn't ask himself a hundred times whether he should just give up his magical quest every day
- Writing, it isn't perfectly elegant yet it reaches relatively high in a few places and some of the scenes are awesome. It's amazingly smooth given the length of the book.
- At the end, I just couldn't believe the author couldn't have continued the story for another several hundred pages....buying the next book when it comes out is an easy call.

Negatives:
- Given how much time/effort that must have gone into making this book, who knows when the next one will be available.
- You're going to have to take breaks reading this book, it is too long even for speed readers.
- The next volume is going to have to add an extra dimension or different perspective...the first book is just right, but two books of this length with the main character doing most of the narrative might be too much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic and Magic 24 Nov 2011
By Metella - Published on Amazon.com

I got a "prescreening" of this. I have to tell you, it is a tome, a thick chronicle that really brings a new world to vibrant life. It never NEVER bogs down. You are pulled into this new world, given just enough history as you go along to walk step-in-step with the band of characters who are off on their quest.

The bad guys have a real depth and some of them having you wondering where they really stand - well, that goes for some of the good guys too.

I could feel the scenes as they were laid out for me, visually complete and really like this new world. Some new weapons, I always love that. Some new kinds of elves, I love that too. Enough action scenes as we move along to satisfy my love of fighting and ambushing.

I can't wait for Volume II to come out.

This is the most professional first fantasy book I have ever come across - polished and complete. I know you will enjoy it.
