A book I used not only for reference and research, but for amusement as well. There are always going to be books that are good, but not so many that are going to be very good, Matthew Engel manages to take this into the latter. History, when told in the wrong way is boring, when told in the correct way and style is fascinating. Engels way of bringing the past into the present makes the book not only interesting to read, but easier to understand as well. At the risk of sounding like his PR, useful for anyone researching or needing to know the background to newspaper history.

Matthew Engel makes the history of the popular press into an entertaining narrative, assisted by the large number of colourful characters that have been involved in publishing these titles.

Written with the usual easy flow that Matthew Engels' readers would expect this covers the popular titles from the end of the 19th century through the 20th century covering the Daily Mail, Mirror and Sun amongst other publications. There is also mention of the characters involved like the Rothermeres, Rupert Murdoch and Robert Maxwell.
