If you're not familiar with Ticket to Ride, it's a game for up to five players in which you attempt to complete railway routes between cities in the United States. The routes you need to complete are based on ticket cards you have drawn, and they are built by collecting enough of the correct colour of railway card. Routes are completed on the board with counters shaped like railway wagons.

The game continues until more or less all the waggon counters are used up. Depending on number of people and type of game, this could take up to a couple of hours. At this point the final score is counted up, and is based on number of routes, length of routes and so forth. This can mean that someone who appears to be ahead can still lose. The scoring method differs according to which game version you are playing. This special edition contains three sets of expansion routes allowing four types of gameplay.

You can adopt all sorts of tactics to block and annoy other players -- depending on how you play, this can get quite heated! If you collect too many cards of a colour, or make your route too obvious, others might figure out where and block you, or even gang up on you.

The game looks great, the board is big and nicely illustrated, the wagon counters are really pretty, and painted and come in old fashioned looking coloured metal tins. My favourites are the zoo wagons, which have little giraffes poking their heads through the roof.

As mentioned, there are four possible versions of the game in this, although the included rules are for the normal version only. You can download the other rules from the Days of Wonder website and print out.

For those that haven't played previous iterations of Ticket to Ride it's a board game by Days of Wonder set around building train destinations across countries (which depend on which edition you get). The 10th Anniversary edition is a special reprint of the US board.

Each board regardless of edition has various coloured track segments between cities covering the whole map. At the start of the game each player gets given destination tickets to choose from (ie New York to Miami), which get you points if you complete them. To build them you need to collect coloured carriage cards matching a segment of track to build upon it, each segment you build is also worth points depending on it's size. Once one person gets to under three carriages the game ends.

It's somewhat more complicated than that as you can only collect cards or build in a turn, not both, and there is an element of risk involved in collecting new destination tickets etc but that's the game in a nut shell. It's very good, and the sort of game even casual board gamers will be able to enjoy, I played it with my 70 year old mother at christmas.

So with that out the way it's the quality of this edition that's important. Let me get this out the way, it's beautiful. The box is gorgeous with it's black finish and lovely artwork. This is a game for collectors almost as much as players.

It comes with a larger board than the standard North American edition with all new art work with things like steam ships, cars and bikes scattered here and there on the map. The Carriage cards also have alternate artwork (the wild rainbow colour locomotive is especially pretty) but the real draw are the player carriages.

I love Ticket to Ride and had to own this when it was released. The game is the same great game as before, but with a whole new look. The inclusion of the 1910 expansion tickets as well as the classic tickets is a real bonus.

The box is massive and very heavy. It is a lovely collectors edition with tins for the trains which are cute little plastic figures - the circus train complete with giraffes is my favourite!

As always with all the ticket to ride series, the illustrations on this game are beautiful and it's a joy to play with.

I occasionally play board games with friends or family and wanted to invest in something none of us had played before but was universally praised by critics. I was initially torn between the standard edition of Ticket To Ride and this special edition but got the latter as I thought it would have more longevity and be a bit more special to play (like owning a fancy edition of Monopoly).

The game has been universally praised by all family and friends that have played it, both in terms of the actual concept of the game and the quality of this particular edition.

This anniversary version comes with a GIANT board that's beautifully illustrated and printed. The cards and counters are pretty decent and will likely stand the test of time. I was initially a little disappointed to find that the trains were made of plastic rather than metal but must admit they still look cool and high quality. Friends and family love the little trains, saying they add character and make the game feel much more 'special'.

Overall I'd highly recommend this edition of the game to anyone who plays board games semi-regularly and is looking to invest in an 'heirloom game' that they can keep in their family for ages. I expect to get decades of use out of this one and have been delighted by how much others enjoying playing it so far.
