"Hot tickets could be awarded for doing something cool, saying something funny, or sometimes even just wearing something the ticket dispenser liked. All authentic hot tickets were two inch by six inch rectangles made from this orange cardboard material, with "HOT TICKET" written in big bold letters at the top. Hot tickets first started becoming popular about a month after school started. Then there was this rash of copycat tickets on regular paper, but people just tossed those in the trash. Everybody could figure out it was one of their friends that made it anyway. But an authentic ticket - that was something you kept.
Some people had their lockers decorated in hot and shame tickets. Some people kept their hot tickets at home to prevent theft.
If I got a hot ticket, I would definitely keep it taped on the inside door of my locker. Right now my locker only had a locker mirror, a picture of Lucy and I from my birthday party at Six Flags and these annoying cat stickers from the person who had my locker before me.
Fifth grade did not prepare me for this at all."

When one of the dorkiest kids in school - Crammit Gibson - receives a ticket before she does, Juliet decides that the ticketing system has to stop. Different and fun,

Not my usual genre, but was looking for a quick fun kindle freebie and this was certainly fun.The hot tickets are an interesting idea, and despite being a lover of (murder) mystery novels, I didn't guess who was issuing them. Overall a good book, some of the slang that started as endearing did begin to grate a little towards the end of the book, but maybe I'm just being a grumpy oldie!

As soon as I saw this book it seemed strange for a minute so I decided to get it. I actually got it for free and as soon as I read the first chapter it seemed thrilling!!! I could not believe it. In 2 days I read nine chapters (half an hour a day) It is a really good book I have to say. You must get it!!!!!!

Fast, funny Mid-Grade with a cool concept,

Juliet is a lowly 6th-grader at John Jay Jr. High, and she has never gotten a single "hot ticket". Hot tickets are mysterious pieces of orange cardboard that congratulate students for being funny, cool, or fashionable, and "shame tickets" advertise when a student has messed up. No one knows who the ticket dispenser is, but kids relish the hot tickets that appear in their lockers and display them as badges of honor.Juliet wants to figure out who the dispenser is so she can confront them about overlooking her. She tries to think of people who might dislike her and the unfortunately-nicknamed Crammit Gibson is at the top of the list. But then Crammit gets a shame ticket, and it looks like her number one suspect is innocent. She starts tutoring Crammit, just to make sure that he's not hiding anything, and investigates other her suspects. Could it be popular cheerleader Cindy Newsome? Or her teacher, Mr. Herbert, with his love for social experiments? When Juliet's obsession with the hot tickets gets her into hot water, she has to decide if this is one mystery that's best left alone. As Juliet tries to mimic her favorite fictional detective, Bailey Bean, her social dilemmas pile up. A few little white lies she tells spiral out of control. Next thing she knows, Cindy considers her an enemy, her best friend Lucy stops speaking to her, and she finds herself on a movie date with Crammit Gibson, of all people. And after all these crazy complications, she still isn't any closer to uncovering the truth about the ticket dispenser, and she's still the only kid in school who is totally ticket-less. Hot Ticket features a likable heroine and its funny set-ups and misunderstandings make it read like chick-lit for younger readers, which is a very enjoyable combination. Juliet is witty even when she's not trying to be, and her voice is one of the best parts about the story. Juliet drew me in from her very first line: "I didn't punch Cindy Newsome in the face on purpose." And her inner thoughts and observations throughout the book keep the smiles coming--another favorite line of mine comes when she's talking about a boy she works with on the yearbook committee: "Henry wouldn't make eye contact with me. But, for the record, it's not my fault he cried during our argument about fonts." This story reminds me a little of Lindsey Leavitt's Princess for Hire series. I can describe this book in one word: FUN!This is a great middle grade book that will appeal to not just kids. It is both hilarious and heart-warming. Poor Juliet. She just can't win, no matter how hard she tries. She's the klutz of the class, and everything she touches seems to go wrong. Reading it, I really wanted her to achieve something other than just being the girl to avoid. The love story portion was so cute. Middle school romance is so awkward and adorable. Really makes you look back at the simplicity of those days and just smile. Overall, this is a great book. It is light-hearted and entertaining. As Lucy would say: tot ridic! I would recommend this to young teens, and really, any reader who wants a quick, humourous story.

This book is told from the viewpoint of a Middle School girl who thinks she is not very popular. The reason she thinks this is because there is a secret ticket giver, who gives out hot tickets for doing something "cool" or shame tickets for doing something embarrassing. Juliet doesn't receive either one, although several kids have dozens of them, even her friends.Juliet sets out to find out who is dispensing the tickets so she can out them and end the ticket giving altogether. In doing it she makes new friends, makes some people mad and gains a certain fame at school. This book was a cute story, but didn't have a lot of substance to it. It did remind me of how silly high school was, and how we used to put such importance on things such as "popularity". I thought it was told well and had some funny twists and turns. If you are looking for a quick and easy read about a silly situation, you would like this book. I give it a 3 out of 5. |
