4.0 out of 5 stars A return to what we expect to read. 11 Jun 2011
By Parm TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Kindle Edition
This review is from: Tick Tock (Michael Bennett 4) (Hardcover)
I've enjoyed most of James Patterson novels over the last few years. Alex Cross is a notable protagonist in his novels, but recently he has gone off the boil a little, These days Alex has some serious competition in the form of Michael Bennett, one of James Patterson's most recent characters! Michael Bennett has a lot going for him - he is New York City detective who balances being a widower with a large family (including a number of adopted children) and an eclectic cast of family, friends and colleagues that make his experiences even more engaging! For that reason, I was really keen to read the latest book that featured Michael Bennett - Tick Tock.

In Tick Tock, Michael Bennett is trying to deal with a number of issues on the home front and in the workplace. Michael and his diverse family (including all of his children, his grandfather, who is also an Irish priest, and the children's nanny) are trying to enjoy a holiday at the shore but find themselves being targeted by neighbourhood bullies who are well-known, and well-connected, in the neighbourhood. Michael also finds himself being dragged back to work as he tries to deal with a very complicated and well-organized killer who is making the city's citizens cower in fear. How can Michael find the balance in dealing with the problems facing his children and how will he track down this crazed and crafty serial killer? If that was not enough, Michael finds himself torn between two beautiful women - Mary Catherine, the children's nanny, and Emily Parker, an FBI agent that Michael has found himself attracted to in the past. All of these elements weave together in a well-crafted and complex novel.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average at best 7 Feb 2011
By Dr Evil TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition
`TICK TOCK', the forth book in the series (following on from Step on a Crack (Michael Bennett 1), Run For Your Life and Worst Case (Michael Bennett 3)) begins when Michael Bennett is dragged away from his well deserved summer vacation to help track down a ruthless killer who is a copy cat of some of New York's most notorious serial killers.

The idea for this one is good but the delivery was not the best - I felt the whole time reading this book that it was struggling to pick up pace (despite the quick and short chapters), there were a lot of unnecessary storylines (like why bring Emily in really? The Flaherty kids rivalry) and the killer never felt threatening enough at all. The ending was also a massive letdown and was very predictable and rushed.

The problem with Tick Tock (and Worst Case before it) is the series started off too strong, I think - in Step on a Crack we were introduced to a fantastic character that was so good it was a worthy competitor to Patterson's other famous detective, Alex Cross; the story was big, bold and exciting and the killers were some of the scariest and most memorable that have ever featured in any of Patterson's dozens and dozens of books, but since the first two novels it has gone slightly downhill.

This is the 4th book in the Michael Bennett series and as with most of James Patterson's novels it grips you from the start. You feel you actually know the characters and whilst the murders unfold and the detective work is brilliant, you feel for Michael as he is still coming to terms with his wife's death but also struggling with his feelings for a fellow FBIofficer, Emily, and his children's nanny, Mary Catherine.
Things are progressing nicely, can't wait for the next one.

3.0 out of 5 stars yet another patterson.............. 3 April 2011

I cannot resist buying the latest Patterson book as soon as it hits the shelves, but he has become rather a factory in churning out book after book, series after series Alex Cross resembling Michael Bennett and so forth. We know the hero is going to come through relatively unscathed having taught the villain his appropriate lesson, yet there is somthing that drags his Patterson Fans back again and again. The flow of the book, the reality of the characters is always good. But to be honest they are a quick 3 hr read tops. His skill in writing is now shared with co-authors making the "factory" idea a probabilty. I realise he must have so many ideas spinning around in his head that to get them all down himself would be nigh impossible. He has diversified into the older children/teen market now which I think is an excellent idea but I wish there was a little more meat behind the plots as there used to be. 220 million books = a lot of money but to be fair, he has reinvested that in a valuable literacy project but with grossing 3 billion dollars revenue, placing him the best selling author of all time.....it rather backs the factory concept. Won't stop me buying them though! Good quick read, great for train/air travel escapism. Tick Tock (Michael Bennett 4)

My other half was not impressed with this read. She seems to think that James Patterson let someone else write it, and did not check out the whole read. Read more
