4.0 out of 5 stars Charming and intriguing true-life Victorian comedy, 29 Mar 2001

This review is from: The Tichborne Claimant (1998) [VHS] (VHS Tape)
An understated little film, The Tichborne Claimant tells a true story concerning a missing heir, an unclaimed fortune and the man who turns up twenty years later claiming that he is the eldest Tichborne. The main characters are the claimant himself, well played by an actor I'd never heard of before, and the real Tichborne's old manservant who trains him in the ways of the aristo. This Pygmalion-style role is played with great dignity by John Kani and it's unusual and exciting to see a black man as one of the central characters in what might otherwise have drifted into a Merchant Ivory-style cliche. The fim looks seriously at questions of class and identity, but is never dull or worthy and there are great parts for a trio of great English actors. Robert Hardy (of All Creatures Great and Small fame) reprises his role as most enthusiastic man in the world, Stephen Fry has a captivating couple of minutes as a prosecuting lawyer and the late John Gielgud sparkles even at the age of 102 as the corrupt judge who is determined to prove the claimant a fraud. Very enjoyable stuff.
