Technical Details

  • Tibetan Prayer Flags - 25 flags on cord - total length approx 600cms; each flag approx 24cms by 17cms. Prayer flags are inscribed with auspicious symbols, invocations, prayers, and mantras. Tibetan Buddhists for centuries have planted these flags outside their homes and places of spiritual practice for the wind to carry the beneficent vibrations across the countryside. Prayer flags are said to bring happiness, long life and prosperity to the flag planter and those in the vicinity.
  • Lung Ta (horizontal) prayer flags are of square or rectangular shape and are connected along their top edges to a long string or thread. They are commonly hung on a diagonal line from high to low between two objects (e.g., a rock and the top of a pole)
  • Traditionally, prayer flags come in sets of five, one in each of five colors. The five colors represent the elements,[1] and the Five Pure Lights and are arranged from left to right in a specific order. Different elements are associated with different colors for specific traditions, purposes and sadhana: Blue (symbolizing sky/space); White (symbolizing air/wind); Red (symbolizing fire); Green (symbolizing water); Yellow (symbolizing earth).
  • The center of a prayer flag traditionally features a "Ta" (powerful or strong horse) bearing three flaming jewels (specifically ratna) on its back. The Ta is a symbol of speed and the transformation of bad fortune to good fortune. The three flaming jewels symbolize the Buddha, the Dharma (Buddhist teachings), and the Sangha (Buddhist community), the three cornerstones of Tibetan philosophical tradition
  • Traditionally, prayer flags are used to promote peace, compassion, strength, and wisdom. The flags do not carry prayers to 'gods,' a common misconception, rather the Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion into all pervading space. Therefore, prayer flags are thought to bring benefit to all.

Not as advertised 8 Aug 2011
These prayer flags are not as legible as uploaded pictures would have you believe, nor are they as big. If one merely wants objects that look like prayer flags for decorative purposes then they fit the bill - for anything beyond that, such as religious purposes or even long term decoration I would not buy these. They were more expensive than others on offer on amazon and I would suspect not as good quality.

The material itself showed signs of poor manufacture - and although I am reluctant to say it showed signs of "wear" I would be worried to be anything but careful with them to avoid damaging them as they look so fragile. The length is as expected and the service was prompt.

Would not reccomend to anyone who wants tibetan prayer flags that are anything like the "real deal".
