Fabulous photography of people and places, and an extremely interesting text - Peissel's long-lasting knowledge of and respect for the Tibetan experience gives confidence to the reader. There's a lot of interesting historical detail made comprehensible by the lucid style - unlike some other books on the subject.
I was impressed by the speed of delivery and condition of the book. Buy it!

This author certainly has a fixation with Tibet having lead or participated in 27 expeditions between 1959 and 2000 to the area he calls Greater Tibet (Tibet plus neighbouring areas where the Tibetan language is spoken). The book adequately covers the history of its exploration, the invaders and massacres (Younghusbands)that took place in the "opening up of the country". The section on flora is good although no phjotographs of the takin are included. It is really the pictures that make the book but it would appear some are quite old e.g. the Potala Palace on pages 102 -3.Despite this the pictures give a good idea how the country was-it has drastically changed in the past 10 years under Chinese in fluence.Afollow up to this book would be welcome to illustratev the modernisation of Tibet which has iccurred.
