amazing depth of research for the serious enquirer into Tibet, with great maps, history, spoken word, everything for the real explorers out there. a bit dry and too detailed but it'll keep your tent on the ground in the high winds. Charles Allen described the author to me as the Sven Hedin of today.

an excellent introduction to the holy places of Tibet. Not quite what I expected, but widely regarded as a classic.

wonderful 5 Dec. 1999
By Jane - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
excellent, lovingly written book on Tibet. Full of maps and descriptions to pour over. Although clearly written with a pilgrim reader in mind, this actually helps since Tibet is quite a incredibly religious nation. I could wish for some photographs to back up the lovely descriptions, but nonthaless an excellent introduction to the culture of Tibet and a wonderful read.

Comprehensive guide for Tibet aficionados 10 Dec. 2013
By Victoria Huckenpahler - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The most comprehensive Tibet guide I've ever seen. Gives one a real feeling for the sacredness of that land. Anyway, that author is superb -- a special person. His 2 books on the Dalai Lama, which are equally excellent. My only regret about the Handbook is its absence of pictures. But as the book already runs over 1000 pp., perhaps the addition of pictures would have been impractical.

i can't think of much better for dreamers 21 Jun. 2012
By benji - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
this is pretty much the definitive guide to learning more about the routes of tibet you will for now only be able to dream of. the paths and trails you will discover in this book are unlike anything you will read anywhere else. there is nothing like this book that i have ever seen. i've had a few copies of this book, often in moments of excitement letting my friends borrow it to never see it again. most likely you actually shouldn't read this cause its just going to make you depressed at the current situation. let us hope for peace and freedom in these utmost holy lands. along with this book in my wandering in tibet i have found Mapping the Tibetan World to be the most useful, i remember being super excited when the english version of mapping the tibetan world came out and i found it in kathmandu. they are both amazing books for those who wish to wander, as well as the map books the truckers use which you can find locally. i am amazed something like this book actually exists.
