Firsthand accounts and spectacular photographs combine to form a fascinating portrait of the endangered Tibetan people, their plateau, and their cultural landscape. Known as the “water tower of Asia,” the Tibetan Plateau is heating up twice as fast as the global average. These rapidly melting glaciers-along with recent unprecedented development on the plateau-are quickly changing the lives of the deeply devotional nomads, monks, and farmers who have lived in this area for centuries. Photographer Phil Borges uses individual stories and portraits to illustrate how dramatic development, climate change, and the deep devotion of the Tibetan people are interacting to transform Tibetan culture. The portraits of the land and the people bring a powerful visual component as the reader meets and learns about Tibet firsthand through these storytellers.

5.0 out of 5 starsBorges/Tibet: breathtaking photo's tell a story4 Nov 2011
By kevincastner - Published on Amazon.com

This book of Phil Borges showed up earlier this week and I devoured it cover to cover, picture to picture, story to story. A pure pleasure, if quite frightening at times, to read and look at. The faces Borges captures- smoking, squinting, grinning, at devotion, are simply remarkable. The landscapes (and commentary from the people of the land themselves regarding the retreating glaciers and the effects on their lives) are breathtaking.

5.0 out of 5 starsBeautiful!26 Oct 2011

Stunning images in Tibet: Culture on the Edge! A departure from his signature style of selective toning of black and white images, Borges continues to create beautiful portraits and has added amazing landscape images as well. This is not a book about the struggle of the Tibetans against the Chinese, but of the struggle with climate change and the impact technology and development are having on the Tibetans as they continue to follow their Buddhist practice and culture.

5.0 out of 5 starsPhil Borges continues to amaze and educate31 Oct 2011

Format:Hardcover
As a long time fan and follower of the work of Phil Borges, I must admit this book is stunning beyond all previous others. His portraits and comments bring the viewer into the world of Tibet on the edge of demise. Tragically, the people that most need to see this book will likely not read or look through the beautiful pages. This book should be shared with leaders at the UN and halls of power in DC. Pity, the subject matter is not on their radar. Tibet is a jewel of many global communities which are at risk of cultural and environmental destruction. Phil captures so much in the faces and narrative in each section: Climate Change, Development and Devotion. This should be a wake up call for anyone interested in climate change and cultures at risk of destruction in the fast changing global political dance we are all part of today. Read this book and write to your elected officials demanding they examine and these issues.
