Book Description

21 Jun 2012
Thyme in my Pocket is a visual memoir of four splendid seasons spent in the rural French countryside. In word and watercolor, artist and writer Alison Johnston takes the reader on an intimate journey home to a country of heart, to a sense of place. In the tiny stone villages of southern France, she lived her dream, born during a six week summer art study in nineteen seventy-nine where she contracted “La maladie des pierres”. Translated as falling helplessly in love with stone, within which one lives and breathes and creates in these timeless villages, she has happily never recovered. For a magical year she and her cycling husband and musical son lived, wrote, painted and played, nurtured by the art, language, music, and most significantly, the cross-cultural friendships which blossomed.

About the Author

Painting is a rudder keeping me in on course through out my life weaving through time, through both beautiful and perilous waters, deceptively calm surfaces obscuring roiling undercurrents. I seek to reveal what is authentic in life. An incurable romantic, I see the same belle vie exists in my brush as in my poetry as in my irish fiddle, in hiking up a mountain with an orchestra of crickets, as in the fetid mud digging for clams, as in the crusting ice in my hair after a descent in powder snow or the brilliant flash of a trout rising. I have been an artist for thirty years having studied art in the village of Lacoste, France and receiving a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Washington. I live on an island off the coast of Washington when not in France in a medieval stone village. I love our four amazingly creative grown children and one man, a sailor, my husband.

5.0 out of 5 stars La Belle France 13 May 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
An utterly delightful and charming book for any art lover or Francophile. Just stumbled across it whilst browsing for watercolour books on Amazon. The beautiful watercolours are complemented by evocative and poetic text. Have already bought a second copy for a friend's birthday. Wish there were more people I could buy it for!

5.0 out of 5 stars Exquisite watercolors and the heart of rural southern France 28 Jan 2013
By A. F. Lohrey - Published on Amazon.com
Rarely does one have the chance to hear what an artist is thinking, or what the moment or place meant to them as they painted. But in this book of beautiful places and imagery of rural southern France, we have this rare experience...the voice of the art and the voice of the artist, the actual impressions of the artist adjacent to her forty-five exquisite watercolors. I felt a unique connection to the heart and mind of artist/author Alison Johnston. A absolute treasure of a book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, lovely and a great gift! Be more than a tourist, live and learn among locals. 23 Aug 2012
By Ventureout - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you have ever desired to be more than a tourist, to experience life living among and being befriended by the nationals this is the seed brought to fruition. "Thyme in my Pocket" strikes a chord for those of us who have allowed ourselves to dream of doing what this author has done. Aspects of living real life in Provence with a small family become alive...things such as house hunting and schooling for children, as well as many joys of simplicity... an ease exists in bringing the sights, sounds and scenery of each vignette to life and each page is dotted with French vocabulary. This might seem a trifle much if, like me, you're a non-French speaker, but the author has included a glossary! You can't help but see the beauty of the seasons in the writing and watercolors; a gorgeous combination. Right now I'm "in" the chestnut grove of the monastery! This book is both lovely and inspiring! I'll be ordering more copies as gifts!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Words, Beautiful Images - makes a great gift 29 Jan 2013
By lovelav3345 - Published on Amazon.com
This book transports one to the south of France not only in the beautiful paintings, but also in the beautiful prose that accompany each painting. The two go hand in hand and would be incomplete without the other. Alison Johnston guides the reader through each season with dozens of picturesque scenes that inspire the senses and kindle in one the desire to see the places and images she describes first hand. This is a wonderful gift for anyone who has ever traveled or ever longed to travel in southern France. The book also provides a bit of a language lesson. Alison provides a great deal of interesting translated vocabulary words specific to her vignettes. You won't regret this unique (and affordable!) escape to France!
