More About the Author

Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was born in Bombay in December 1865. He returned to India from England shortly before his seventeenth birthday, to work as a journalist first on the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore, then on the Pioneer at Allahabad. The poems and stories he wrote over the next seven years laid the foundation of his literary reputation, and soon after his return to London in 1889 he found himself world-famous. Throughout his life his works enjoyed great acclaim and popularity, but he came to seem increasingly controversial because of his political opinions, and it has been difficult to reach literary judgements unclouded by partisan feeling.

Product Description

This short book comprises of a couple of poems and three short stories, all to do with a dog's perspective on life. One of these stories is about the life of a ship's dog and is told by a human, while in the other two it is the dog narrating the story. Kipling cleverly manages to capture what things must be like from a dog's point of view and really allows the reader to get inside the mind of a dog. The first story, as told by Boots, a little black terrier, is ingeniously written because it is written using Boots' "own language". For example, he refers to the moon as the "shiny plate", and his master as his "own God" etc. All in all, this is rather a sweet little book that deserves greater recognition.

Lovely old book written from the dog "Boots" a little Scottish Terrier's point of view, beautifully illustrated with black/white line drawings by G.L.Stampa. He describes the hunt, hounds, the fox and other animal members of the family and their adventures in 1924.

Charming, charming! This is the autobiography of a Scottie (Aberdeen Terrier) related in simple, child-like English. It is often very funny indeed. "I found a Badness in the road. I liked it! I rolled in it!" Written for children, it will amuse dog lovers of every age.

I love the stories in this book. The world seen from the dog's viewpoint. I've already read it several times and will treasure it to read again many times in future.

Told from the perspective of a dog called Boots this story captured the imagination of my children from beginning to end. I wanted to send it to my neice as a birthday present but sadly it is out of print. The story is a little dated but the themes are current and I would recommend it to anyone - not just for children.

I LOVE Boots! 21 May 2013

I have enjoyed Kipling's writing since I was a child, but never had seen this out-of-print gem until my adult years.

At first it was a little difficult to figure out what some of the things were that Boots was telling the reader about, since it is written from the perspective of a very self-possessed Scottish Terrier with no small amount of self-esteem -- but LOTS of charm.

Boot is 'Rrrrreal Dog!' He does dog-things, like chasing the Kitchen Cat, chasing the neighbor's calves, befriending an injured Foxhound, and in general living the life of a country dog.

The illustrations are wonderful -- obviously done by someone who understand the heart and soul of a Terrier. Being a Terrier Person, as well as a Dog Person, I was quite smitten upon first viewing. Boots would be welcome in my home at any time.

As far as I know, the book is still out of print, so a good used copy is the way to go.

I got this as a gift for my wife. She is a big fan of Rudyard Kipling, and she enjoyed it immensely. There are some stories that are only available in this publication. A must for the die hard Kipling fan!
