As I meet up with friends every Thursday evening at eight, I bought this book on impulse and it was on my "to read" pile for a while - but once I picked it up, I could not put it down. It is unashamedly chick-lit, but the best of its kind, offering four cleverly interwoven stories unfolding over breakfast every Thursday at eight.

From page one you will be drawn into the stories of four very different women: Clare has just been through a divorce and needs to rethink her life; Elizabeth is in her fifties, widowed, successful and is determined to live life to the full; Karen wants to act but her appalling mother just wants her to be like her equally appalling but very respectable sister; Julia finally has time for herself and for her new business until she finds out she is pregnant!

Strong and appealing characters, great pace and plotting and some unexpected twists makes this a true page turner.

Format:Paperback
The mixture of first person and third person narrative works well in this book. The format is not used as a feature as other books seem to, but just blends in well with the story, adding to the book, and I was very comfortable with it.
The four main characters are continually developed throughout the book and I think that the range of ages worked well.
The language used by the women was very natural and I could imagine it as language I would use (even though it is an American author!!)
The events in the book are very real and there were lots of descriptions and snippets of dialogue which made me smile with recognition.
The only complaint I would have was that it was a bit too tidy at the end but I guess it is a book.
Very good book to pick up as an easy read but not outstanding.

Cosy chicklit 29 Jun 2010
By Nicola F (Nic) TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
If you like your chicklit on the cosy, albeit a bit on the cliche and predictable side then this is the book for you to curl up and lose yourself in.

Centred around four very different women who originally meet at a writing class and then continue meeting for breakfast once a week when it ends, this is the story of friendship, families and relationships from four different perspectives. It's heartwarming in places and the depiction of the womens' friendship is very well done, but the book also touches on some difficult subjects which stops it from being too nicey-nicey.

Whilst I enjoyed the novel, for me it loses one star simply because I felt it ended a bit too abruptly. Whilst all the loose ends were tied up nicely, I feel like some aspects could have been elaborated on a little bit more. Nevertheless, a nice pleasant read. If you haven't read any of Macomber's books before then this would be a good place to give them a try.

good but not great
This is an enjoyable story but a bit lightweight. It's absolutely fine for a relaxed read but not if you are looking for thought provoking content. Read more
