Book Description

Rumer Godden's classic coming of age story about a boy who longs to dance ballet will delight young readers.

From the Back Cover

Doone Penny is a child with a gift - he was born to dance. But though others recognise his talent, there is little encouragement from his family. His mother preens over his pretty sister, Crystal, also a dancer, but fiercely competitive and vain. Doone's father would never allow a son of his to have ballet lessons, and his brothers think he's a sissy.

But Doone has passion and ambition beyond his years, and knows he can succeed, if only he is given the chance. If he can make it into Queen's Chase, Her Majesty's Junior Ballet School, he'll show them all . . .

I liked this even more than Listen to The Nightingale by the same authour. Didn't know whether she had written anymore after reading LTTN, and then was scouting in my library (a teenager by this time) and found this. This is a really insightful and amazing portrayal of an ordinary working class family with an ambitious ballet mother who devotes all her time to ensuring her daughter Crystal, the only girl in a family of sons, will become a ballerina. The mother is happy with her little golden girl but what will happen when one of her sons happens to have a talent that far outshines Crystal`s?

An interesting book which takes you into another world. It is a pity that Rumer Godden's books seem to have fallen out of favour. She is such an imaginative writer for people of all ages.
