I have been searching for this book for a long time. My family were Thurber addicts, as his eccentric stories frighteningly echoed our own reality! It is without doubt the funniest book I have ever read; I can't remember how many copies we got through!
You can spend hours reading this richly-packed book, or you can dip briefly in for a quick reminder of the insanity that is Thurber's world.
Cartoons of hen-pecked husbands and towering, strong women sit next to beautifully-crafted articles and stories: the hysterical account of Thurber's myopic career in the Army (discovering his eye in the microscope mirror) - the difficulty of remembering names and places ('Perth Amboy' is forever in my head) - The Night the Bed fell on Father and the unforgettable aunt who saw burglars off by throwing her shoes down the stairs. Here are Things that go Bump in the Night, insight into the human psyche and a glimpse of a totally quirky world-view which has informed my whole life!
If any of this appeals, do yourself a favour and read this book as soon as possible!

Please, please, please read this book if you enjoy humorous writing. James Thurber has always been a legend to me, but I would like to share his writing with more people. My daughter, who is 18, really enjoyed reading some of the shorter stories, so his humour is still relevant today. Do yourself a favour and read this book.
