Review

A thriller, a chiller and a pleasure to read (New York Times )

Book Description

There is only one Bond. Enjoy these intoxicating spy novels in stylish Vintage Classics editions. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

From the Back Cover

When Ian Fleming quit Naval Intelligence in 1945 he had a plan - to write the spy story to beat all spy stories. And so the world got the hero it had been waiting for - James Bond.

'He was one of those men - one meets perhaps only two or three in a lifetime - who seem almost to suck the eyes out of your head. He was their Supreme Commander - almost their god'

SPECTRE is a merciless new enemy - a group of the world's toughest criminals, headed by the brilliant Ernst Stavro Blofeld. When two NATO atom bombs go missing, Bond must unravel SPECTRE's intricate plans and prevent a global catastrophe, in Fleming's ninth 007 adventure.

'A sensational imagination, informed by style, zest and above all knowledge.'

About the Author

Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in London in 1908. His first job was at Reuters news agency after which he worked briefly as a stockbroker before working in Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. His first novel, Casino Royale, was published in 1953 and was an instant success. Fleming went on to write thirteen other Bond books as well as two works of non-fiction and the children's classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The Bond books have sold over sixty million copies and earned praise from figures such as Raymond Chandler who called Fleming 'the most forceful and driving writer of thrillers in England' and President Kennedy who named From Russia with Love as one of his favourite books. The books inspired a hugely successful series of film adaptations which began in 1962 with the release of Dr No, starring Sean Connery as 007. Fleming was married to Anne Rothermere with whom he had a son, Caspar. He died in 1964. www.ianfleming.com
