Product Description
Long before Sylver the weasel was born, the humans all left Welkin. Now life for a weasel - under the heavy paw of the vicious stoat rulers - is pretty miserable. Sylver sets out to find the humans, following up a clue in a place known as "Thunder Oak". This is the first of a trilogy.

From the Back Cover
Long ago, long before Sylver the weasel was born, the humans all left Welkin. Now, life for a weasel - under the heavy paw of the vicious stoat rulers - is pretty miserable (unless you happen to be a weasel who LIKES living in a hovel and toiling all hours for the benefit of the stoats).
It's certainly not enough for Sylver. Or for his small band of outlaws, both jacks and jills. But slingshots and darts can only do so much against heavily-armed stoats, and life as an outlaw has a fairly limited future (probably a painful one, too). That's when Sylver decides to find the humans, and bring them back to Welkin! His first step is to find a clue that lies in a place known as Thunder Oak...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great story with lots of twists and turns, 5 Jul 2001
By A Customer
Someone left this book in a bookcase in our holiday home. Like the New Zealand reader I've read all kinds of animal books, but this is one of the best. I thought the plot raced along and I thought the idea was that it alluded to other medieval stories. I loved the jokes too. Brian Jacques is good, but this is just as good, if not better. I don't understand why someone should read a book then just because they don't like it they trash it. What a waste of time. I prefer to recommend what I like, in case there are other readers like me. I recommend this one. I can't wait to read Castle Storm now.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dissappointing, but still good, 21 Oct 2004

Garry Kilworth is a great author, there's no question about that. House of Tribes is a wonderful book, and in my view many of his short stories are even better.

Of course I am an adult, and this is a children's book, but I'm sure that most children would find this as patronising as I did. The story is quite interesting, but you never really feel that the obstacles are anything other than yet another in a sequence of hurdles in the depressingly linear quest.

The weasels themselves make for great characters, but they are not sufficiently developed. All in all this is a story of unfulfilled potential.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest books of all time, 3 Sep 2003
By The Mysterious Manx Mongoose (Fitzroy Harbour, Canada) - See all my reviews
I found Thunder Oak to be one of my favourite books I've ever read. The characters are interesting, the plot works, and the climax was one of the most dramatic I've ever seen. Magellan is one of my favourite literary villains of all time (tied with Sarumon the Many-Coloured), and I really liked all the slightly Tolkien-esque occurences and symbols: e.g. One of the best fighters in the party, Dredless, is killed with arrows because he can't keep his temper. This is remarkably similiar to the death of Boromir in the Lord of the Rings. Thunder Oak would make an excellent film!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Kilworth's best
I read this book after reading another of Kilworth's animal fantasies (House of Tribes). Without wanting to compare them, I didn't think it was as good. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A great read!
I read this book merely because it was written by Kilworth. Although I love his books, I was pleasantly surprised.

This book is about the weasel, Sylver. Read more
