I've been a fan of Martyn Joseph's for about 15 years or so since I borrowed "Sold Out" and "Treasure the Questions" from a friend and then saw him in concert and at Spring Harvest. I own all of his albums except "Ballads" (which Martyn cringes when he thinks about anyway) so I would say I am as good a judge as anyone of this collection.
If you are totally new to Martyn's work, let me start off by saying that "Thunder & Rainbows" covers the following albums released between 1988-2000, some of which you cannot get anymore: "Treasure the Questions", "An Aching and a Longing", "Being There", "Martyn Joseph", "Full Colour Black & White", "Tangled Souls" and "Far from Silent".
Looking through the track listing it is incredibly hard for me to pick a particular favourite track of mine. The Proud Welsh amongst you will certainly find "Please Sir" (pit closures) and "Dic Penderyn" (English oppression of the Welsh) of interest. For those of you looking for soul food or acoustic ballads there are plenty of tracks to whet your appetite such as "Change Your World", "Precious" and the incredibly moving "Carried In Sunlight" which Martyn wrote about the last years of his grandfathers life when he was afflicted by Alzheimer's.
In the same way that if you were only going to ever own a single Billy Joel album, I would have no hesitation in recommending his 1985 Greatest Hits 1&2 double CD, I would say that if you are only going to own one of Martyn's albums that this as the one to go for. It contains the very cream of the albums listed above and is a fantastic introduction to one of our greatest hidden treasures.
You can really notice what Joseph has set out to do since ditching the major record label he had signed with a few years ago and as a result this album is a refreshing change to the most of the stuff around at the moment.
It has to be said that Martyn Joseph is at his best live, but as a compilation of his best work, this CD is fine and extremely comprehensive and thought provoking. Buy it!
