4.0 out of 5 stars Another melodic rock highlight 11 Nov 2013
By John
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The Place Vendome project is comprised of Michael Kiske (ex-Helloween, Unisonic, etc) on vocals, Dennis Ward (Pink Cream 69) on bass, Uwe Reitenauer (Pink Cream 69) on guitars, Gunter Werno (Vandenplas) on keyboards and Dirk Bruineberg (Consortium Project) on the drums.

As on the previous album, the songwriting is provided by different musicians. Timo Tolkki (ex-Stratovarius, Avalon), Magnus Karlsson (Primal Fear), Alessandro Del Vecchio (Hardline), Tommy Denander (Radioactive), Brett Jones, Sören Kronqvist (Sunstorm), Andrea Cantarelli and Roberto Tiranti (Labyrinth) make up the songwriting team.

The music on Place Vendome's third album is a mixture of the previous two offerings. The sound is more guitar oriented compared to Streets Of Fire and more AOR focused compared to the debut album. A good mixture of melodic hard rock and AOR with plenty of hooks, good dosages of melodic and heavier riffs, some astonishing solos, lots of keyboards and tight rhythm sections.

Although the instrumentation and the production shine it is vocalist Michael Kiske who steals the spotlight once again. For one more time he proves that he is still in perfect shape and probably delivers his best performance with Place Vendome. The songs contain a wide variety of vocals, although this time Kiske focuses more on the higher end of his range to great effect.

The melodic hard rocker "Broken Wings" and the soaring "Thunder In The Distance" are the stronger of the heavier songs. The up beat and uplifting "Never Too Late", the energetic "My Heart Is Dying" and the melodic "Lost In Paradise" offer some very solid AOR. The dynamic "Heaven Lost", the power ballad "Maybe Tomorrow" and the mellow "It Can't Rain Forever" are the best of the slower songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality, good music 23 Nov 2013

Following on from that last two albums that were very good I was looking forward to this one. The only criticism I have with the great melodic music and super voice of Mr. Krisk is that the songs do not vary enough for me from one to the other as much has in the previous albums. Nonetheless, it is an easy album to listen to when relaxing with your feet up even with the more lively tracks.

This is a superb CD - all the ingredients are there; slick production, fantastic musicianship, the unique and classy vocals of Mr Kiske and best of all, excellent songs. The orchestration isn't in your face either, like some albums, but is used to subtle effect n the background. A number of reviews have commented on the lack of variety of music on this CD and I can understand their point (most songs are smooth, mid tempo melodic rock), but when it's performed as well as this, I'm happy to sit and listen to it over and over again. It's certainly up there with the Find Me , Work of Art and debut Lionville CDs, all of which fall into this category. There are no standpoint songs for me - they're all good, but there are some beautiful moments such as the guitar 'trills' at 2:50 in "Fragile Ground". A truly wonderful album.
