Book Description

1 Jan 2011
A lot can change in three months: wars can be decided, nations can be forged...or entire species can be brought to the brink of annihilation. The Morningstar Virus, an incredibly virulent disease, has swept the face of the planet, infecting billions. Its hosts rampage, attacking anything that remains uninfected. Even death can't stop the virus. Scattered across the world, embattled groups have persevered. For some, surviving is the pinnacle of achievement. Others hoard goods and weapons. And still others leverage power over the remnants of humanity in the form of a mysterious cure for Morningstar. Francis Sherman and Anna Demilio want only a vaccine--but to find it, they must cross a countryside in ruins, dodging not only the infected, but also the lawless living. The bulk of the storm has passed over the world, leaving echoing thunder and softly drifting ashes. But for the survivors, the peril remains, and the search for a cure is just beginning...

5.0 out of 5 stars Continuation of one of the best 29 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
This is the second of a trilogy with the final installment yet to be released.
The differentiation here is that infected living become fast moving 'sprinters' while anything other than a brain kill will reduce them to equally murderous but much slower 'shamblers'.

Again, well written to keep the pages turning, reflects another vision of a collapsed society. Militaristic viewpoint and at times the soldiers feel a little too effective/fortunate but the story is non the worse for it.

Very much looking forward to final part.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended 25 July 2011

This is the second book and easily as good if not better than the first. the characters in this are gone into in more depth and that pulls you more into the story. There's plenty of action in this and its more realistic than some zombie novels I've read, the characters in this have to struggle not just against the zombies but against a world in ruin, where other humans are a threat and food and other resources are scarce. It seems to me that there should be a third book in the series as there are some loose ends, however I didn't find the end at all disappointing for that and you are left with a good view of how the things that aren't tied up are going to turn out. If you haven't read the first morningstar strain book you should read that first.
UPDATE - Third book showing on Amazon as coming soon WOOHOO!

3.0 out of 5 stars Zombies? 12 July 2011

Format:Paperback
This time it is more humans than zombies id say. But it was a good, but very quick, read.
It is still a must for zombie/post apocalypse fans.

I downloaded the Audible audio book for this hot on the heels of finishing "Plague of the Dead", Recht's first book in the Morningstar Strain series.

Finished it today at the gym (Recht's audio books seem queerly good to work out to) and on the whole I wasn't disappointed.

Firstly, don't get me wrong - I wasn't looking for epic literature listening to these books, and if that's what you're hoping for, well, why are you listening to or reading a zombie novel? "Thunder and Ashes", as with "Plague of the Dead" gives you simply and straightforward action from the outset.

It carries on the stories of Anna Demilio and Francis Sherman, along with a few other stereotype survivors (journalist, soldier, loner, medic) with some expendable "extras" chucked in for good measure along the way. They are looking to find a way to Omaha to a research institute, in order to find a vaccine to the Morningstar virus which essentially turns its victims into zombies.

The only disappointments in this book were the 'twist' at the end which I unfortunately saw coming a mile off, and the "American Values" played out where Sherman and his survivors spend half the book assisting saving a town they come across. Still, the action therein is written well enough, and I enjoyed the lot from start to finish.

If you're an Audible member, then this book is well worth a credit. Really not sure why the price tag on the book is so high on Amazon - it may be worth waiting for it to come down a tad before purchasing the book itself. Still a good 4 out of 5 read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Zombie liteature at its best 1 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Z. A. Recht's Morning Star Strain - saga is the best enterteinment that the zombie genre has to offer nowadays, and if you have read the first part of the series, I don't even have to tell you that this sequal is a must have! This is a book that you just simply can't put down when you start reading it, and when you finnish it your hunger for more is even greater. Luckily, even thought Z.A Recht has passed away, he managed to write almost all of third part (and the last) of the saga and it will be released later this year. So, if you consider yourself to be even slightly a Zombie-fan this is a must buy!

Part one of the saga:
